Torque on Mobile Devices? and RTS in Space?

by Michael Lubker · in Torque Game Engine · 12/25/2005 (9:37 am) · 11 replies

Hi,

I have 2 questions.

First, is Torque able to be used for development on any mobile devices?

and, is the RTS kit usable to create an RTS in space (like Homeworld for example) ?

Thanks
Michael

Not to sure on the Michael, what kind of project are you looking to do something in the same line as Homeworld? I am working on a space MMO project as well, that will have RTS features along with the exploration of an MMO. I see you are located in Austin perhaps we can get together some time.

Orbz was released on the Tapwave, but I'm not sure if the footprint for TGE/T2D could be dropped significantly enough to make cell phones a viable market with the engine. But then, I've also never developed anything for cell phones, so I don't know.

The RTS kit is land-based in terms of camera and unit flocking and selection. Seeing something like Tube Twist (which, yes, I know it is a puzzle game) may be closer in terms of space selection and manipulation outside of the terrain stylings of the RTS kit. I haven't looked at the community projects for the RTS kit in a while, though.

My RTS plans call for both land-based and space based areas. Donald: meeting would be great. I'm the IGDA Indie SIG coordinator, maybe you can come to one of our local meetings sometime and we can talk. I'm considering having our next meeting on Jan 6th.

To all of you thanks for the info!

I'm actually thinking less for cellphones and more for PDA's, mobile consoles, and... the iPod ( using iPod Linux )

They have already ported Doom over to iPod Linux so I would think Torque should be possible since it runs on Linux.

Hey Micheal if you don't have a place in mind I do know of a locally own lan center that could use some extra public awareness. And they would love hosting you.

Talking about Cyberjocks or something else? We're working out a deal with them currently.

No a local one by the name of http://www.lanzsport.com/ which for some reason or another the website is down. But I do know they would be very very interested in chatting with you.

Well, we're already working with Cyberjocks so I'm not sure if I can work with both. I have heard of LanzSport so perhaps I will go sometime. We'll see. I would like to extend my group's reach as far as possible so if there is not conflict of interest I would work with both.

So the project you are working on... Where are you at in your status? Just forming a team or kind of gathering some ideas?

Been around a while in the OSS world, have some good team members but haven't had much on the programming side, and been trying to find a good engine. So may do it in Torque.

I see. I have very little programming experience and I am trying to get a team together to work on my project. I have one friend that is working with me now but since we are both learning the pace is not moving at all. If you don't have the meeting on Wed. I should be able to come out. Wed. is biblestudy so I can't miss that. By the way Lanzsport website is back up give them a call (512) 246-9871
ask for Randy and tell him Donald sent you.

Seems its a common problem trying to find programmers :/

Our meetings are *generally* not on Wednesday but are sometimes. I'm not sure yet when our next meeting will be.

Thanks
Michael
