Maps and Models

by Justin Pittman · in Technical Issues · 02/27/2002 (11:10 pm) · 1 replies

I would like to know a good file format for maps. As of now i am Hard-coding all of the maps, it is not very good if i want to add maps without rebuilding the WHOLE game again. It also slows the game down, and makes the executable huge. I would like the file format to already have an editor, if possible. Basically the same thing for Models.

Thanks

P.S.

If there are tutorials you could point me too, that would also be great, and I am using C++ if that matters.

.map is the industry standard for interiors (and interior style maps, like seen in Quake, Half-Life and Unreal series games) Many editors are out there, ranging from Qoole (my *tear* first mapping tool) to Quark (an underground favorite. If you have time to learn this editor, it's worth it. Has a handful of features other editors don't) and Worldcraft... my personal favorite. Pretty easy to learn, and good documentation. If you're a power-user you're best off using Quark, but pretty much anyone else is better off sticking with good ol' WC!

AS for modeling... Milkshape or 3d Studio Max. Don't use 3d Studio Max unless you have the cash for it. I cringe to see people making software for an industry that is one of the worst pirate-wise USING pirated software! Ugh!

Milkshape is the only tool I've used for modeling, and it's damn cheap... oh, and did I mention the company who makes it has the coolest name! Chumbalumbasoftware or something :P IT's so cool you can't even spell it right!

And you wonder why Myrmrrdiiaeon is doing so well? ITS THE CONFUSING NAME NO ONE CAN SPELL CORRECTLY 'CEPT THOSE MAKING IT!

I am renaming my game to Zyphroe
