What 3d modeling tool do you recomend?

by Romano Del Vecchio · in Artist Corner · 12/21/2005 (12:55 pm) · 52 replies

I have been using Milkshape for over a year. It is nice and simple for beginer; I have tried to learn Blender, but its interface is just strange.
Now I am in posotion to buy something little more serious than MS3D. What do you recomend?
BTW, 300$ is my limit.

Does anyone have experience with Cinema4d / BodyPaint3D ?

Soo many programs - It would take ages to try them all out, but I don't want to waste ages trying to get the "wrong" one to work either :)

I have done some modeling for 3 years now and found out Hexagon from Eovia is pretty nice and very easy to learn modeller even for novices.
It has dynamic geometry and same tools you can find in Silo.
I have tried Silo, Modo, Blender, Wings 3D etc. but still Hexagon some how fits to my needs perfectly. I use ZBrush 2 for texturing and for further adjustment of the mesh.
I have used Carrara 3 for rendereing but it is more like toy.

Really, give Hexagon a try you will be amazed. Just my two cents though.

Hexagon full is 249 dollars -not at all expensive.
Hexagon is strickly modeling application but has very nice UV-editor for exported mesh.

By the way does any one here know any stand alone, photorealistic renderer?
Price should be below 400 dollars.

Many thanks for any hints!

@Nazareth
There is no such thing wrong one, everyone prefer something else.
As far as I know Cinema4d is great for poly modeling and BodyPaint3D can create some amazing textures
but it will take time to learn them.

I use Silo for modeling and Im also thinking about buying XSI 5.0 with some DVDs
but I still no 100% sure so Im waiting for now.

Use blender!!!!

its free
has torque support

the interface is hard to learn, but completly costumizable.
its falls into the league of maya, lightwave, and 3d max. so if you want a really powerful 3d tool use blender!!!!

learn the interface then you can do anything you want. has also scripts in python

I typically like to use DAZ3D and Poser, Last I knew Daz3D was free and extremely powerful for a modeler.
I wish there was an importer or exporter for it to something I can get it into TORQUE with.

Romano evreryone is suggesting XSI and it $500 for foundation and you can upgrade the difference, which is good and its an excelent 3d tool I have it Just one problem, Ive been waiting a year and the exporters aren't out yet. So if you can wait for the exporters it would be worth it.

Ive been looking into Animation:Master www.hash.com
it is dang hard to learn though, as its a spline modeller instead of poly, its $299 and is full featured... was used extesively in www.takandthepowerofjuju.com/

tools ive been using is wings3d to model (i find it extremely easy), then been trying to learn blender to animate (but like many i find the interface confusing)

but for pure modelling my vote is on Wings3D because some features that are handy (at least for me):
-able to cut an edge into equal segments (can cut in 2 or more, sometimes has problems over 10)
-when edges are cut, it doesnt cut the adjoining faces
-when a vertex is selected it shows you the exact XYZ coords
-selecting 2 verts will show you the distance between them
-selecting 2 edges will show you the angle between them
-right-click context menu (only shows commands that can be done with selection)

I'd go for Maya Personal Learning Edition unless you are working on a comercial project.
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=6902573

It got all of the features that Maya got.

I'm using gameSpace and yeah, I am in something of a love/hate relationship with it, but in spite of that, for the price, there is nothing else more powerful out there. When it works right, I really enjoy using it...

Give it a look... you can try it out for free with gameSpace Light. (It does have some limitations like the number of polys in your scene/objects, but is otherwise functional.) www.caligari.com/gamespace/gsl/gsl.asp

I agreed with Kevin use Gamespace. I am develop tutorials on exporting model with transparency, alpha channel, transparency layers, animation with bones and without bones, and level building. Gamespace is real easy once you learn how to use it correctly.

@Michael Lindsey
Make sure you review the DAZ EULA before using any content you get off thier site. They specifically forbid the distribution of any of the content in any form other than 2D renderings or movies. Basically they forbid any and all use of thier products that would let you ship them with a game.

Too bad really, there is some nice stuff available for that platform. Sad thing is, people who have asked questions about it on the forums in the past get flamed just for asking, usually along the lines of "there is no engine capable of using such a high poly model in real time work.". Unfortunately they also limit you from starting with the models you buy and working them down to a usable poly level.

I like CharFX for animation but I use Wings for modelling/UVing. For Torque export, I use Milkshape. Its a useful trio that tols its cost at a measely $50.

I am however considering using Blender for Export and UVing. I've heard they're good.
