Complete MMORPG Development Guide

by Dreamer · in Torque Game Engine · 12/20/2005 (3:02 am) · 594 replies

Hello everyone.
I have the MMORPG Advanced Tutorials completely rewritten for TGE 1.4, with all kinds of new features.
The new tutorial series is called "The Complete MMORPG Development Guide"
It is meant to take a person from the earliest stages of developing a game Conceptualization, Design Docs etc to a ready to ship MMO.
I am in the process of transcribing it to my site at mydreamrpg.com
This will be the final incarnation of the guide until there is a TSE for linux, at which time I will again do a port.
To access the development portions of the site as well as the code sections of the guide you will need to be a current TGE licensee. (currently you will need to be verified by emailing me after registration)

I am also launching a game based on the tutorials, as well as a second site DreamRPGOnline devoted exclusively to the game.

The guide is meant to be a living document and as new and better ways are discovered of doing things, it will be updated by the community that is building up around it.

A secondary goal is to provide a plethora of content for people looking to create rich worlds using the MMORPG enchancement kit I will be providing at no charge, as well as an open market for up and coming artists and coders to sell their content to help subisdize their own game development desires.

I want to stress upfront that this site is NOT meant to compete in anyway with garagegames, in fact to access the vast majority of content on the site you will need to be a TGE licensee.
In fact it is my strong desire to spur sales here of indie games and content, and to increase the interest and awareness of crossplatform indie created games.
I also (quite intentionally), make heavy use of content and packs which can only be purchased here at garagegames.com
Without these packs the full richness of the guide and MMORPG enchancement kit cannot truely be experienced.

I hope everyone here enjoys the site and at least comes to pay us a visit.
We will be doing a load test and server burn in on our game servers as soon as I have enough users on the site who wish to participate and I could sure use your help in doing this.

Regards,
Dreamer

BTW you can't post here without owning the SDK so I don't think everyone has to say "SDK owner".

Ok everyone up to this point has SDK Owner access.

@Randy are you still having difficulties with the site? If so drop me a line pls.

Site is experiencing some difficulties at the moment.
Looks like a DDOS against the site originating in China.

For the moment I am bringing down the site, should be back up in 30 minutes.
In the meantime, please do not refresh views on any pages, since I think the site may be being hacked, and I'm tracking it right now. I need to rule out IP addresses.

I have banned the offending IP addresses (I had to ban half the dam internet) and verified /tmp has the proper bits set.
Everyone who was logged in please log out and log back in.
If you get an "access denied" or any other kind of unexpected message either from the site or whatever, email me your username as well as your IP address and the URL you are trying to access and will get this rectified.

Please note for the time being I have removed AcidFree albums, I will attempt to return them after the holidays, but a large portion of the DDOS URLs were going to the acidfree directory (presumably because that content is normally stored in a trusted section of the hard-drive)

If anything else is missing let me know and I'll put it back.

Lol, never fails - someone gets the least bit popular and someone tries to hack him :(

Site is up, I have Zend profiling the site. Just installing ZendPlatform has cut page loads from 10 seconds to about 2 seconds. GarageGames, you guys SERIOUSLY need to get that if you don't already have it.
Anyways Merry Christmas, there is a TON of new free content courtesy of Aparatus and me on the site.
Enjoy!

@ ALL

Drop me a line (office@dropandplay.com) if you need SDK owner acces on mydreamrpg websitealong with your GG profile link thank you :)

the profile link is needed for obvious reason: no one can get SDK owner rank there unless is a SDK owner here.

@Dreamer: Please add myself and Josh Williams. We would love to look around. We have those China DDOS problems all the time. In fact, that was why the site was slow two weeks ago.

@Apparatus: I'm not understanding your post about giving SDK owner access.

@Jeff: Apparatus is talking about giving SDK owner access to their site, not to the game engine, no worries ;)

@Jeff - I believe who followed the threads and went over to mydreamrpg understood, so i'll edit the previous to make it clear for everyone and avoid confusion

@Jeff & Josh
You have been promoted to SuperAdmin.
All GarageGames Employees are entitled to this, since without you, MyDreamRPG.com would not and could not exist.
This is the highest level of authority, it goes beyond Admin and allows direct access to the database if something were broken.
You also (for redundancy), have all access levels below it.
I am doing this for transparency reasons. And because I trust you guys completely.
I have read the licenses I think I understand them but I know I'm not perfect. This way if something gets placed into the wrong access level (for instance RTS code got placed into the SDK owner area), it could be fixed immediately, even If I or Apparatus or Gus were away.
Enjoy!

p.s. Feel free to help Aparatus promote folks to the proper access levels, he's a bit new to the whole admin thing.
