When should I move to TSE?

by Marcus Daw · in Torque Game Engine · 12/20/2005 (12:00 am) · 13 replies

I have really been studying TGE recently and am fascinated by it. I do want to create something that looks a little bit better though. I was wondering what the transition to TSE is from TGE. Is it so different that it will look foreign to me?

I am also interested in the answer to this question...

I understand most things are the same.. but should I be able to just drop the new demo .exe in my game dir and it will work? or will I need to take more things into account via script?

We would be rehashing a lot of stuff that has been said about the products recently. You might want to look in the general discussion forum about TSE's EA status.

I've read somewhere that TSE will no longer be using datablocks, how much will this change things? How will datablocks be replaced?

No, you read wrong (unless I'm gravely mistaken), the talk of dropping datablocks, iirc, was about the materials, which is how the shaders are exposed to script, by allowing users to tweak their parameters.
Still going from memory, that change was made a while back.
If I'm wrong, someone will pipe up, hehe :)

@Nicolas

I didn't know enough about Torque at the time when I read that obviously. I found it here. Thanks for the reply. I am actually quite relieved that I don't have to just forget datablocks down the road. :)

So would it be that hard of a transition to pick up TSE after I have gone through GPGT AND understand it?

Not at all. It's pretty straightforward. Main difference is that in your custom C++ files that use GL calls, to change them to the new GFX layer. It's quite simple.

Maybe I'll pick it up before the end of the summer then.

I'm also for the 'Early Adopter' pricing and the stable performance. For me, it's still too far away from completion, especially if you are using Mac and/or Linux.

@Ramen-sama

I don't blame you. I'm just itching to start playing around with all the extra goodies. Hopefully it will be pretty close to release by September.

I am with Tim on this one. Until TSE is at the same level of TGE in productivity I see no reason to switch. Since I choose to develop under Linux that is another reason. I know my eventual main target will be Windows, but right now I don't have to deal with viruses, malware, buggy OS, etc. I know GG has a better understanding of how they run their business, but it is interesting to note that Doom and I am sure others were developed on platforms other than their target platform. The last time I tried developing under Windows I suffered from continual segmentation faults and other nasty things. Now I would have to deal with activation, viruses, etc.
