Torque and planetside...related?!?

by AllynMcelrath · in General Discussion · 12/17/2005 (7:45 am) · 13 replies

Plansetside was created by the original creators of tribes.

I have been playing it for years now, and when i started playing with Torque, the simularities became realy clear to me..right down to the wonky transpariencies.

The story I heard behind it is that the manager that ran Dynamix while Jeff Tunnel was away( off starting GarageGames I believe ) and the manager was responsible for the Tribes 2 project. Well after Tribes 2 was released some head budding went on between the manager and several people (even some Tribes 2 beta testers which I knew one of them). Some things happened, but basically I know I'm missing some large pieces of the story and in the end pretty much the guy (same manager, still don't recall his name) ran Dynamix into the ground, left the company, and went off to start Planetside project later.

That's the relation Planetside has with Tribes series... Now if anybody cares to clear up my little snippets of a story then please do so, its been so long since I was told the whole story, but now I cannot remember half of it. :)

The engine acts just like Torque... movement, terrain, Insides.. ETC.. it is torque..advanced here and there.

Im not realy interisted in the background of "What happend", i have been playing the game for years now and find its a good way to look at how things have been implemented in a Torque based (even if it was recreated) engine.. It has helped me alot in making some of my models seeing how SOE's artiests have created the art assestes.

You would have to find out what's in the famous UBR file :)

It could have some pieces of old V12 who knows. But the netcode supports huge battles... I have seen in crash around 300 + people. It's an original work as far as I am concerned. Just the Big Wigs at SOE think you have to keep patch messages going out to make people happy. So they get bored and start "nerfing" things over and over till the games become watered down, the clients become bitter and the development staff becomes the enemy against the userbase.

Well, at the very least, its set up just like torque (with some changes) as far as how things are handled, terrain, trees, objects, vechicals ETC...

Uhhh I'm 99.9% sure Planetside does not use any Torque code, heh. And please, never ever refer to Dave G as 'original creator of tribes" - as many people felt he ruined Tribes 2 and was the cause of its many errors on release. He no longer works for Sony from what I have been told.

Planetside was in development long before Dave G aka Qix aka Smokejumper went to Sony.

Graphically, it feels alot like Torque. It probably uses the same rendering tehniques (why reinvent the wheel?).

Very good question... hope a GG dev can shine light on that.

Planetside would require a really good multiplayer engine. And then you look at Torque's and you kinda nod your head that it could very well be made from Torque.
