1.4 lighting bug?

I'm trying to sink a DIF building into the ground. Right now I onle have a basement without a ceiling and I've cut a hole in the terrain and sunk it in place. The problem is, it appears as if the lighting routine ignores holes in the terrain and it's giving me really bad lighting on the floor. Is this a limitation with the light rendering?
