1.4 with TBE/GCC3/MSYS/MingW etc.

I don't think TGE 1.4 compiles with any of these options, I found a patch on the forums for a CVS version that fixed a few errors but doesn't properly patch the release version of 1.4.

I'd like to buy the lighting pack, but I assume I'd need to compile the source code to incorporate it and I can't afford (and don't want to buy) Microsoft compliers. I also have some custom changes to the vehicle code that I'd like to make.

1.3 compiled fine, and if there's no easy fix I might have to go back to that :( I like the new buttons in 1.4 though :D

Any advice?

If you have a windows environment, try VC++ express from Microsoft.
It's free (if you download it before June 2006), and should work with TGE. AFAIK, you will need to download some SDK in addition, but if you search in the GG forums you should find useful info about how to set it up.
