Uvw map problems

by Riccardo Berta · in Artist Corner · 11/24/2005 (4:42 am) · 27 replies

I try to make a cube using uvw map with 3ds max 7, and I change the mapping in one of its faces.
The problem is that when I export in .map, my mapping is not present, I have for all the faces:

( -24.8731 -37.5635 0 ) ( 40.1015 15.2284 0 ) ( -24.8731 15.2284 0 ) SimpleTexture 0 0 0 1 1

I think that after the texture names I must have two square parentheses with some kind of numbers inside...

Consequences are that in Torque I see a mapping wrong.

Ideas?? ( I use Game Level Builder v 2.22 for .map exporting )

In max you name your materials the same as your jpegs so MyFloor01.jpg would be a diffuse bitmap in MyFloor01 material. When it saves the map it uses the name of the material.

... ( 366.262 156.464 154.432 ) SidingHorz001 [ -1 -6e-005 0 304.026 ] [ 0 -1 0 -301.533 ] 0.0 0.0762 0.0762
SidingHorz001 is the name of my material in max and the image is called sidinghorz001.jpg.

$500 is for the Max to Map exporter part which exports mapping coordinates properly. v3 just exported the texture name but not it's position/rotation.

Thats really cool that it does that Dont you think?

Basically what Im seeing in 3dsmax , I now get in torque.
I must be the only person thinking this is so Cool !

I know its not perfect,
I mean I can now get more into the engine than before.
I had been focusing on character development for so long waiting for constructor to come out.
Im happy this works mostly.

What im thinking is.......

1.Start producing detailed maps textured the way I want in 3dsmax.
(Via : Calling Materials by correct names)
2. Import into QuArk, make what every adjustments possible at this time
3. Export DIF to Torque engine.

At least my maps show up full, and textured, right away. I can tell a hallway from
a ceiling from the door ways.

The way I look at it is, at least now theres some kind of concrete way to do this on my end.
Where before I felt a little helpless.

GLB3 Is blazing fast at Level design. I really think people would like to know this
about 3dsmax and the GLB Exporter.

Still - $500 is really pricey for something I know others are trying to work through.
Im saving my money and going this route till a better and cheaper(way less than $500)
option is available.

Yes I agree the price ($500 which was for 2 seats of just the exporter and not the whole thing)is to high IMHO considering other options that are out there that will do the same and more for under $100. Now if he's going the route of it being a "3DSmax Plugin" then I understand the price increase which is a good move on his part, but still would only pay $100-$200 tops for it considering the old price compared to the new features added. Its unfortunate cause it sounds promising.

Ok just confirmed price with an email from him-

"My new plugin when released will cost $1500 and GLB3 owners will get a $100 discount.
If you wish to buy a beta copy of the entire package it will cost $1500, if you want just the new MapExporter and FileRunner for compiling maps etc.. it will cost $520. If you buy the full beta then you will get the full package when it is finished, (which i hope will be within 2 months).
If you purchase just the map exporter and then wish to purchase the full package at a later date you will get a 25% discount from the full package price at that time.
Note: The beta is beta and therefore will have some bugs in it and not all of the new features are fully finished yet. Also files created in the beta may or may not load in the full finished version due to possible changes in the new file format."

Well that settles it for me. I will not be upgrading to that. How does a $40 product go to $1500 with a few extra features and a new name? Texture mapping export is great and all, but not worth $1460 not even worth the $500 just for the exporter. 3DWS does just as much and more and its only $100. I think he would sell alot more if the price was more like $200, but thats just MY opinion. Oh well its a shame. Well best of luck to him and I commend him on the hard work he put into it.

Just noticed this from his email.

"If you purchase just the map exporter and then wish to purchase the full package at a later date you will get a 25% discount from the full package price at that time."

So thats:
$520 for mapexporter
$1125 for full package with %25 discount for buying the exporter
=$1645 thats a $145 more you have to pay

I agree.

The pricing seems over the top.
