Linux Collaboration

Hey guys,

Based on the discussion happening at Jeff's .plan, I'm starting a thread here in the private forums so that Linux Torque developers who are interested in seeing stronger Linux support can get more involved in the development process.

This is also a chance to help get more Torque projects onto Linux. There's a bit of a shortage of reliable Linux-enabled developers that are willing to do builds, help port, etc.

So if you want to see across-the-board Linux support happen, you're a good dev, and you're willing to donate a little time to the cause, consider volunteering. :)

(And don't think this is a thankless job, either - of the four Linux guys I've worked with, one now works at GG doing XBox 360 development, one does builds for many games, one is able to make money doing contract work, and another is working on a kick ass RTS with a now-GG-employee... This is a great opportunity to get more involved in professional game dev, get some nice perks, or just earn the respect & adulation of your peers.)

Having a list of people who are interested in this sort of thing will be a big boost to anyone trying to get their product on Linux, including things like GG getting future Torque releases out. :) Instead of scouring the web, people can just check here. Fast, quick, easy.

Thanks for taking the time to get involved!
Ben

Maybe someone should check to make sure the dynamictexture is initializing itself properly in that case? :)

I have a similar issue, if I set rez to 640x480 windowed or otherwise, and then switch to any other res it segfaults.

By the way are we linux people going to have an installer soon?

I am unable to reproduce the seg faults mentioned above, done several launches of the demo/starter.fps/tutorial.base and starter.racing (names could be off, just woke up). Also set my res to 1024x768, switched it to lower res and back to higher with no issue.

Installer for SDK and DEMO is built and ready to be shipped to GG, due to its size I am unable to mail it. Fired off e-mails to MattF and JoshW informing them of my status and need of a place to upload the files to for their internal testing.

All,

I have sent GG a SDK and DEMO installer for final testing yesterday evening, if all goes well it will be added to the downloads for the TGE product.

The font issue has not been addressed in the files I sent, I see it as an open issue with the linux platform for which a new thread has been created. My hope is that thread will become as active as this one and leads to a community driven solution.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help get TGE 1.4 stable and to a release candidate, GG (as do I) truly do appreciate the effort the community has shown to support TGE linux.

@Ron,

if you want to see the seg faults on switching resolution modes you MUST be using starter.fps. The other kits don't have the seg fault.

You need to setup by running starter.fps and set 640x480 fullscreen 32bit - click apply
click to exit torque.

Now rerun torque with starter.fps and attempt to get out of 640x480 fullscreen and that's when it seg faults for me.

@Charles,

I'll try again this evening. I played with demo, starter.fps, starter.racing and the tutorial.base the other evening and could not get a crash.

@Ron,

I think you forgot something?

People wont be able to use the world editor to set transforms for healthkits,trees,cottages,ammos,crossbows,etc because the font isn't rendering.

Can't set properties for sky...sun...etc.

@Charles,

Please send me a screensht and a console.log (see my profile for e-mail address) from the session were you noticed the font issues with the editors

@Ron,

you can see the problem on eddieray's screenshots
( that he linked above: copland.udel.edu/~ed/tge/linux-font) -

look at the bottom 2 pics - he selected the sky and look at the empty white boxes,

on the next screenshot, he selected some item and again look at all the empty white boxes
where transform xyz numbers should be (etc...).

I need to go outside so when I get back I'll email console.log and screenshot

@Charles,

Interesting, never seent that when I was running my Ubuntu with no MS fonts, wonder if it is distro specific.
I'll install ubuntu on my sons box (dual boot) this evening and toss Fedora on it without ms fonts.

I noticed you mentioned simplyMepis, in an earlier thread.. is that a distro? not sure if we can be compiant on the x-million linux distros, would be nice if we are stable on the major ones. RedHat/Fedora, Mandrake/Mandriva (spellign), Slackware, Ubuntu, Gentoo and Debian (IMHO those are the mainstream distros)

I don't think the problem is distribution-specific but I haven't tested the theory personally. The fact that Charles and I both see situations where we get no text at all in the Inspector supports that theory tho'...

@EddieRay & Charles,

Lets move this font discussion to the font thread.

@Ron,

I emailed you 2 screenshots and logs

I've reproduced the crash by doing the following:

1) "./runtorque.sh debug -game starter.fps"

2) Change resolution to "640x480" and check "Full-Screen" and click "Apply". (game is running full-screen 640x480 now)

3) Quit.

4) "./runtorque.sh debug -game starter.fps" (game still running in 640x480 full-screen mode)

5) Change resolution to "800x600". Click "Apply"... BOOM!

Sooo ummm hows the installer coming along?

@Dreamer,

Spoke with MattF via IM lastnight, they have been swamped at GG. Matt said he did receive the instalers, but had not passed the on yet. He assured me that he would send them upstream on Monday.

All,

I will be offline for roughly a week starting on Monday, going in for my kidney operation. I'll ask MattF to post to this thread regarding the status of the 1.4 installers sent his way.

Sorry to inflate this thread even bigger than it is, but best of health and best of luck with the operation Ron...we'll be pulling for you!

@Ron, just noticed the bit about operations, sorry to hear you need one, anyways best of luck, you will be in the prayers of a lot of people.

@GG ok i't been 3.5 weeks, are we getting the Linux installer posted soon, so
A) I can quit pulling from CVS everytime I make a major mistake.
B) Synapse Gaming can make a 1.4 TLK for Linux that actually works?

p.s. Major point of this was just to bump the thread in hopes that Matt and the rest of the GG crew would take notice.
In that spirit, if like me you cannot see Post a Reply, look closesly for the area where the post a reply box would normally be, and left-click/drag down to bring up the post a reply box.
