Autorun Creation

by Matt Huston · in General Discussion · 11/20/2005 (5:54 am) · 11 replies

I have a few weeks to create an autorun for a training DVD I have created for a client. I've never done an autorun before. Does anyone have any information on programs for creating something like this? I would use it for Navigation of videos on a disc, sort of in a way that PC Gamer and other magazines have their monthly cds.

You just have to include an autorun.ini file on your cd/dvd with whatever instructions you want if I remember rightly?

Unless I'm maybe not understanding your question right?

If you are talking about menus, then you would need a program for that. I can't remember the names of a few, but I think some DVD authoring software has it built in. Check that first. If not do a search for like DVD Menu creation software or just menu creation. Nero should have it though, I think I used it there once.

As for autorun.ini:

[autorun]
open="file you want to launch (which will probably be the menu file)"
icon="use this to make a pretty icon that shows up on my computer :)"

There are more parameters but that is the most common used. Should be good enough for you to use. Save all that to autorun.ini and put in the root directory of the DVD.

Hope that helps ya out man.

EDIT: Typo or two or three

I'm currently attempting autorun myself. The freeware (and free to have) that I'm working with is an autorun.inf editor from Moon Valley.

my exe comes from an intaller that was created using NullSoft, which at this point I have been very successful. One being used now called AmericanJazz.exe.

When I used the editor, these are the steps

In the "Enter the program to run" box, I put in the AmericanJazz.exe
In the"Select icon" box, I put in the .ico
In the "Context menu item" box, I put "install"
In the "Associated commands", I put "AmericanJazz.exe"

Inside the setup information file that was created:

[autorun]
open=AmericanJazz.exe
icon=Jazz.ico
Shell\Option1=Install
Shell\Option1\Command=AmericanJazz.exe

Then I click "save". I burn everything on the cd.

But when I insert the cd in the drive, it doesn't run.
Is there something here I'm missing?

If there is any other type of autorun program that someone has been successful and is willing to give me some step-by-step, I will definitely be appreciative.

Thanks,

~Tatjana

Edit- few typos and a last minute, I am contacting Moon Valley and will post their answer

Thanks guys, knew about how the INI file works.

Thanks for the names of the software for making them. I could have made them in VB but some people would have trouble running the files from a VB app.

@Matt H

Please let me know what you get working and how you did it.

This is my first exposure.

Thanks and take care.

Didn't get an answer from MoonValley.

Any suggestions on this issue before it gets lost in the shuffle?

Thanks,

Do you have autorun enabled on your system? When you insert other disks, do they autorun and it's just this one that doesn't?

@Tom Ogburn

Thank you for your response.

I did download the MoonValley autorun program and was able to get the file. It's just getting the file to work with its assigned exe file (according to the instructions). My intent though is to have the program that I have created to run on another person's pc while using the disc.

Without knowing better, I don't know what is meant by having autorun enabled on my pc.

Thanks again,

~Tatjana

If they never auto run, then you probably have auto-run disabled for the drive, so no amount of playing with the the file will make it work. You would need to re-enable auto run on the drive to make it work.
However, if other cd's do auto run and it is just this one that is not, then there is something wrong with the file.

Thanks again for your response. Enabling autorun is something for me to research, especially enabling from the disc on another person's pc. I will post a resource once I get this established.

Best wishes,
