Light kit same as TGE?

by Dylan Jones · in Torque Game Engine · 11/19/2005 (12:56 am) · 5 replies

I have two questions;

1. the lighting kit demo, is that just the same as the TGE demo, but with the add lighting feature?

2.If i buy the license for the TGE, and TSE, but not for the lighting kit, will I be able to release the title for free? Or will I have to buy the lighting to release anything?

If I have to purchase it, or if my title seems to be good, and worth selling(After players reponse) I will buy the lighting kit.

Hi Dylan,

From what I understand, the lighting kit is a separate 3rd party product, made by John Kabus. It contains source code that integrates into the core Torque engine code. Using it in one of your games will require purchasing the code kit, adding it to your project and re-compiling.

You don't need to buy/use the lighting kit in order to release games. TGE or TSE source is all you really need. But projects done with the lighting kit look cooler. They tend to be more vibrant and 'believable'. I plan on buying and integrating the kit as soon as the new 1.4 codebase version comes out.

If I remember correctly, the current lighting kit demo is a re-work of the Torque example app plus a few more missions/levels to show off the LK features. A new lighting kit demo is supposed to be coming out soon with all new art by Canon (who does awesome work, by the way).

If you want to use the lighting kit demo executable or plan to just change the 'game' by adding your own content to the LK demo, then I'm pretty sure that's not allowed. I might have misunderstood that part of your question -- if I did, I'm sorry about that.

I hope that helps,

Aaron E.

1. Yes

2. You can release a TGE or TSE game you made for free.... if you want to use the lighting pack demo to release a free game then I think it's ok. (as it's just classed as a "mod")
But modding the demo isn't going to allow you to have many features, as most need source changes.

If your going to buy TGE and TSE, then an extra $50 isn't much. :)

Thanks guys! I might get the lighting kit the time as I get th TGE and TSE even though 50 bucks seems small, but 100+150+50= $300 plus im Canadian so its going to be like 340ish. Not bad for being able to make money off making games! The lighting kit makes everything cool lol.

Take Care guys!

Go with TGE and Lightning kit, I think is a great solution that run in most computers.
