T2D 1.1 development transparency

by Jason Cahill · in Torque Game Builder · 11/15/2005 (2:57 pm) · 84 replies

I really hate to even post this kind of message because these threads usually degrade into flame war and nobody feels good. But, that said, there are many of us that are interested in hearing "what's going on?" It's been a LONG time since we last heard anything about T2D 1.1. Please understand that I'm NOT looking for a release date. I'd like to know what's been happening? What's left to go? Anything worthy of screenshoting/videos?

I've seen that Melv is active in the forums, but he has not posted a plan in almost two months. I'd really like to ask that either Josh or Melv make the commitment to give us a once-a-month plan. It does not need to have release dates. It does not need to have videos. But, it would be really handy for us as a community to understand what's going on behind the scenes.

Thanks for listening.

Why must we get a 1.1b? Since we already have 1.02, why not just a 1.03 or something along those lines? You can still reserve the '1.1" line for something more complete.

I don't think anyone would care about the version number - just the content.

I mean, I love T2D 1.02. I also think we're WAAAYY overdue for an update. So, call it whatever you want. I'll be more than happy to update my code more than once.

Thanks!

I think the reason for the name is simple. Melv and Josh believe that there are substantial changes, which would warrant that big of a version bump. Since this is a beta of 1.1, it seems only natural to call it precisely that.

Quote:I guess Melv is playing Yoda for this episode.

Seek path to v1.1 enlightenment you do yes, mmm.

Get what you want you will, yes.

Bring it onto yourself you did, yeaaassss.

Channel the force you now must.

Go forward and seek the goal of every Jedi; to make a game you must ... IT IS YOUR DESTINY!

yes, mmm.

I thought the 1.4 code base was frozen.

It certainly is. No extra features but plenty of bug-testing has been going on so the only code changes are serious bug fixes. There's also lots of other non-code related stuff that goes alongside a new release that can fall behind as well. This is not an official GG response as I'm not official GG but it's essentially this.

@Melv: Ohhh, ok. I guess I misinterpreted what Ben Garney wrote about it.

I actually spent most of the day testing out the demo, running it through it's paces and cleaning up typos, etc. It is pretty solid (I'm talking TGE 1.4 here by the way, not T2D). From what I could see walking around the office, roughly 50% of the staff here has been working on the testing of the latest builds to make sure we get a quality release today in various forms.

Today? :^D

If 1.4 is shipping so soon, why release a 1.3-based version of T2D 1.1? That's what I was wondering earlier.

I just re-read my post, and want to clarify something so we don't set false hopes:

When I said "quality release today", I did not mean "release quality today, but meant "spend today making sure we have a quality release".

Just wanted to clear that up.

@Seth: That was why Josh asked--do people want a beta version that is built off of 1.3 to play around with, or do they want to wait for the full integration with 1.4 (which is basically what is slowing down the next T2D update). People have mostly indicated they want the new T2D version regardless of the base TGE release it's built against as soon as possible...

Yeah I figured that about 1.4. Just twisting words to suit my desires. :)

I'm all for releases as frequently as possible, but I thought it'd be silly to release a 1.3 version if 1.4 was relatively around the corner. More work for you guys, especially considering how long it takes to package stuff up over there. Eugene must really be a slow-paced town. :)

Well, as awesome as TGE 1.4 is, it's gravy when you take into account the meat that Melv and Josh have provided for the T2D update, so I myself can certainly see benefits to grabbing the meat and worrying about adding on the condiments later!

Fair enough. Just don't want to over burden Melv/Josh/you/whoever :)

I absolutely agree with Stephen. As I've said throughout this thread, I would prefer more opportunity to play with the bits than wait for "everything to be perfect." The reality is that nothing will ever be perfect. The best way to ship a product is to get it out into your customers hands and let them "beta" with it. Even if TGE 1.4 shipped tomorrow, it does not mean integration with 1.4 is going to be instanteous. I can imagine that GG would want to spend at least a month playing with it to make sure everything works. That's one more month I could be learning the future. One more month of building prototypes on a system that has a lot of features and bug fixes that this community has been asking for for quite a while. Shipping 1.1 beta on 1.3 is a very sensible solution and probably takes a lot of pressure off of GG to take their time and get the integration with 1.4 right and at the quality bar they feel comfortable with.

Make 1.1 the 1.3 and 1.2 the 1.4 :)

Josh knows my stance on this - sorry Josh no more eMails.

I say ship it as is!

Thanks guys...

What Rany Said. Makes perfect sense to me. That way when people start flip flappin' around the bugs on the forums we can tell the difference between 1.3 T2D bugs and 1.4 T2D related bugs

I am looking forward the new release for a long time. And continue to wait ...
