Death of Tony Hawks

I so wanted this new one to be great. THUG 2 was a too simplistic and I finished in within a day, the same with this one. If you can play Tony you'll certainly finish it over a weekend.
The thing I have always loved about tony hawks games is that if you bail, you know its your fault. That is what has made it such a great game. With this PS2 version its buggy as hell.
Collision detection is touchy, you end up IN objects as much as on them. The camera is flaky at times and can make you feel sick. You probably won't get to see your bails as the camera has a habit of sticking 6" away from your head if you bail near a wall.
There are some SERIOUS bugs and some very unpolished areas.
There is a task where you have to spray paint a tag, but first you have to gain your new wall climbing skills. Fine, but when you get back you have to grab a rail, pull up and TRY to jump across but he instantly falls down again because of the collision.
I also just did a sub-task, passed and got left in a secret area that there is no exit from and had to go back to my last save point!
All in all. Terrible. The engine is seriously touchy on the PS2, its buggy. The gameplay feels unfinished and the story mode is just a training session. You feel like the game should start when you finish it.
I am seriously dissapointed.
Wahhhhhh!

I prefer the amped series of snow boarding games.

In real life, some moves can take a month or so of practice to be able to execute smoothly, while in the game all it takes is a press of a button and a direction on the D-pad. This makes non-skaters appreciate skill and talent a little less, because they don't understand the complexity of the trick. Many people that play this game too much expect to see real skaters (and sometimes ask them to) pull off very difficult things like they see in the game.
Don't get me wrong the THPS games are fun to play, but it would be nice to see a game that illustrated the complexity of such skills.

I enjoyed playing the THPS2 and THPS4 games, but personally as a street skateboarder of 15 years (on and off), the problem I had with it is that they made complicated tricks look easy - especially with the variance of slightly to overly exaggerated physics. In real life, some moves can take a month or so of practice to be able to execute smoothly, while in the game all it takes is a press of a button and a direction on the D-pad. Most tony fans I know really respect real boarders and do understand that tony hawks is a game in the same way that Gran turismo and tekken are. You wouldn't expect to drive or fight like that in real life ;)

@Jeffery : There is a realistic cheat in one of them, can't remember which. I played that and it was a nightmare absolutely no fun at all. I wouldn't assume people don't respect the skills required to skateboard. I used to be a semi pro BMXer in the day. I was up to backflip and superman standard and I always respected skateboarders more than our lot. The 'simple' act of a board flip is amazingly difficult to get right. Most tony fans I know really respect real boarders and do understand that tony hawks is a game in the same way that Gran turismo and tekken are. I'm sorry to hear the new TH isn't any good. I was looking forward to it as well.

@Jeffery: In real life it's a lot harder to shoot a gun than in Battlefield 2, and it's a lot harder to climb up walls than in Prince of Persia, but I don't think that takes away from how players feel about those two things. Just because I've finished the PoP games doesn't make what, say, Jackie Chan does any less impressive.I'm sorry to hear the new TH isn't any good. I was looking forward to it as well.

But the tagging tasks are an absolute joke! Find the tagger (follow the little yellow paint can in your compass) and spray his icon, RIGHT NEXT TO HIM! Wheres the challenge in that! Wheres the 'I'll give you cash if you climb to some stupidly hard place and spra my tag!' At least that would give you something to do!
Me disappointed, bitter, twisted... Never!

@Tim: It may just be the PS2 version thats buggy as hell, not played the others. Anyone around here played it on XBox?But the tagging tasks are an absolute joke! I've had friends/co-workers that weren't impressed at all with my boardflips or 180 double kickflips, but instead asked me if I can do damn near impossible moves (at least impossible for the average skater) that I can only imagine they've seen from playing THPS, which they have admitted to playing.
But I have to admit playing THPS is fun, and even if it weren't fun, I'd probably still play and finish it just to see the video clips of real pro skaters doing what they do best (especially Rodney Mullen's).

I get your guys' points, but I was speaking generally about non-skaters that play the game. It truly takes a real skater to appreciate such things on the same level as a skater does, IMO.I've had friends/co-workers that weren't impressed at all with my boardflips or 180 double kickflips, but instead asked me if I can do damn near impossible moves (at least impossible for the average skater) that I can only imagine they've seen from playing THPS, which they have admitted to playing.

Yeah, Rodney Mullen's videos are simply incredible. That guy is some kind of fantastically gifted mutant to be able to do the things he does on a skateboard.

Yeah, I believe he's the inventor a lot of the common street style tricks seen today, a true pioneer in skateboarding. He's also a physics geek, no wonder he has such balance and skill on a board, because he understands the tricks on a different level than most.
