Would you pay for torquescript?

by Sean H. · in Torque Game Engine · 10/18/2005 (11:53 am) · 15 replies

I'm still hacking away at torquescript and implementing the features for my game. seeing all these .plans makes me want to do one myself but I am resisting the temptation in order to wait for the right time when I can show somethine worthwhile.

to get to the point, I had an idea recently that I want to get some feedback about. I noticed that alot of the time Ive spent writing routines in script may actually be valuable to other torque developers. in addition to simple scripts, I also wonder how valuable resources detailing the development of all the major subsystems of a game would be to this community.

then the question hit me that I'm posing to you guys. how much would you pay for a complete torque game tutorial using torquescript only? when i say game tutorial, i dont mean general information about how to go about a game, im talking about a complete in-depth documentation packet for a complete playable game including documentation explaining ALL script code, major subsystems, tricks and advice. basically you'd be paying for someone give and explain all the script code and resources they used to complete their game in torque. would you be willing to pay $5-$10 for a resource like this?

would the garagegames community support a resource based on documented torquescript only?

I think it's an interesting idea. I think Ken's book does a decent job explaining a lot of things, but I find myself often wishing he could have explained many things better.

Why not, 10 $ is cheap if you can learn something from it ;)

There are numerus times when I wished for some clean script example, even when is something simple to solve (unfortunatly it's always simple later). And of course there is "always" a better way to write code (even when you think it's perfect.)

GG would be interested in buying something like this for a set fee in order to give it away to the community.

As a newbie I am very interested in that.

Sure would pay 10 $ or even more if it helps me to understand the torque-mechanism better

I know I spent WAY too many hours drudging through post, and looking at every resource available to figure out how to edit certain scripts for my project, only to find out that there was no support in the engine for what I needed to do.

I would have happily paid for someone to either provide the script, or tell me it was not an option do to the way the engine handled my specific needs.

I see more of the same work ahead of me, so YES! whether it is available for a small fee, or as Jeff suggest, available from GG, either way would be very useful.

Yes! I'd even be smiling when I paid it.

I very likely would. I could see a clean, well documented and well commented script example being something worth purchasing. I know I'd like to have something like that since I'm just getting back into Torque.

+1 for Jeff.

I am frequently amazed at GG's support for us.

@Jeff,
Does that go for T2D as well, since it has different licensing restricting what you can do with the scripts?

Ok i think I will try my hand at this. in the interim, I will be closely documenting my code and writing drafts of sections of the document. dont expect any great grammAR. =)

@Sean H.

Sounds very cool. I'd buy it.

@Tim S.

Yeah, the GG guys rock.

I would donate some time to fix up the grammar and spelling if you're worried about it Sean. An editorial position would be fun. If you're interested email me (addy located in profile).

@Tom
Since one would have to be a T2D licensee to see the scripts, I don't see that it would be a problem. You just can't give your T2D scripts to non-licensees.

I would pay, yes. Great idea. Also I am constantly impressed by Garage Games' support for the community. This is a great place.
