Good side scroller shooters?

Hi Guys!
Could you name a few Side scroller shooters, the ones you find the best. I would like to learn from them, to checkout the gameplay and why are they so addictive. I am not looking for source code or anything else, just a few well know names :)
I remember a few from DOS days but I can't remember the names :(
THANKS!

Radiant Silvergun, R-Type, Ikaruga, 1942, Gradius. Not necessarily side-shooters, but they're great!

Gradius III for the SNES
Bangai-O (More like Robotron, but also great)
One of the things I look for most in a shooter is an uncluttered background. Many shooters (Silpheed PS2, Mars Matrix, Einhander, to name a few) have cluttered backgrounds that just make it harder to see the bullets and enemies coming at you. One of the wonderful things about Ikaruga is that the graphics are good but the bullets stand out from the background so well that you can dodge every one of them if you're good enough.

Gunstar Heroes was the best side-scrolling shooter I've ever played. It had very impressive graphics for the Genesis and there is a lot going on on screen. As for gameplay it was just really simple but fast paced; Hords of guys.

Area88/UN Squadron, the Guardian Legend, and if you can find a copy look at Parodius(parody of Gradius with an interesting selection of enemies).

@Randy - I can remember being 11 years old and riding my bike out to the local KMart with any quarters I could scrounge up to play Kung Fu Master. It was actually a pretty fun game back in the day...times sure change.
