Do you think the programmer will be able to build an engine as capable as Torque for $100.00?

If not then just buy Torque!

If you need a special Engine Torque might not be suited. However yes, paying a programmer to build an engine from scratch is some what risky.

My suggestion unless you intend to work on this engine and sell it (has to compete with all the other engines out there), is that go with Torque, or go look at an open source GPL engine such as Quake 2 or Crystal Space.

At the moment where just starting work on out own engine, but that wont be publicly accesible for another two months at least.

did you say...Reyes? THE Enzo Reyes? of the Reyes Clan? *deep bow* i love your plugins! not that ive used them, but i dont need to use cartoonreyes to love it, just looking at the pics on your site did that. funny, cause i remember checking all the time for the Reyes suite for max 4, like a year ago, and finally giving up. then outta the blue i remembered cartoonreyes and thought, "what was the name of that company? oh yeah, infografica!" when i came back to gg an hour later i saw your post.

ReyesEngine, eh? seems like everyone these days is making an engine, i wonder whats keeping discreet quiet?

unless of course i have the wrong Reyes, i which case, nevermind :)

I've seen so many independantly developed engines that look nice, but so few that actually perform well with actual gameplay.

If you're not going to be the key programmer, you're better off not trying to make your own engine. Unlike games, the programmer is pretty much the entire project. If you're not going to be doing it, then you shouldn't expect someone else to do it for you unless you actually have cash for them.

Use Torque if you're making a game and are making a 3d game that is a RTS, puzzle, strategy, action, online-only, or pretty much any genre (it's hard to think of what games might not be good with the engine... maybe a standard sports game like baseball)

So if you're not a very hardcore programmer who has the talent (or time) to make your own high-end engine then Torque is by far the best choice for anyone making an indie game.
