Difficulty with Torgue Game Engine Demo

by K. Silver · in Torque Game Engine · 10/05/2005 (8:27 pm) · 30 replies

I have downloaded the Torgue Engine demo. However, I cannot get it to run. I run XP Pro, have 512 gigs of ram, 1.5 Gig processor, plenty of gigs of HD space, have DirectX9.0 installed.

First, the Torque Game Engine Demo window opens...

Then the screen goes black, seems to turn a dark blac-blue, turns black again then returns to the normal screen, showing the Torque Game Engine Demo window.

Now, this is the console log, or, rather, part of it. It continues on with hundred of lines of "This Shouldn't Happen:" that I do not think I need to post. If someone needs it, let me know.

Do you have a 3d-card? Torque requires one. If you do have one, update the drivers.

I am using an ATI Radeon card and the most recent drivers I can download from the site are installed.... However, when trying to install a detection utility for the latest of their drivers, I received a "Hardware not Found" response. So, now, I am uncertain what is and what is not working on my system.

As soon as I have this resolved, I will post again.

Thank you, Stefan.

Okay, the ATI card is working.... However, what I probably need and have not found is a step-by-step walk through on how to set this demo up and use it. I realize this may be a pain, but if someone could see their way to doing this, I am very interested in purchasing the engine and this demo (once seen) will help me make the decision.

Thank you in advance...

Hmmm..... I saw that there is a torque tool entitled TST Show Tool Pro... Demo. I thought this would be a good way to also test the issue. It does exactly the same thing. It shows the startup dos window, blanks the screen, fades a bit then reverts to the original default windows screen.

Also, I have noticed, shortly after running either of these demos and failing, I get a virtual memory minimum memory too low error.

Well, it doesn't look like you're missing anything on running the demo - it should just be execute - check the console.log again, basically on the you've posted, everything goes south at this point:

Video Init:
Accelerated OpenGL display device not detected.
Accelerated D3D device not detected.
Voodoo 2 display device not detected.

=============

I'm running a 9700 mobility radeon and get:

Video Init:
Accelerated OpenGL display device detected.
Accelerated D3D device detected.
Voodoo 2 display device not detected.

If its not detecting your video card, your chances of running properly are slim to none.

Okay, Paul.... I looked and the other demo console log and it said the same thing about OpenGL not detected, etc.

I think that tomorrow I will purchase a new card unless you might think of something I might be missing, Paul. Have any suggestions on what kind of card I should look for, specifically to run Torque?

Before splashing out on a new video card, you might want to try uninstalling your video drivers and then reinstalling them.

If that doesn't work, download a slightly older version, uninstall the newer ones and install the slightly less new ones. Sometimes the latest drivers are a little buggy, particularly with older cards.

You may then need to reinstall/upgrade DirectX.

Wysardry....

I have tried installing new drivers for the ATI cards as well as for my Gigabyte - GA-7N400 Pro 2 Motherboard on this system. Perhaps it's time I simply built another system for this project, which is okay, but I would like to test Torque out with the Indie progam, first. So, on that note, do you have the time to lead me through the process of updating these drivers? And, is the Radeon 9200, 128M DDR capable of supporting the needs of Torque?

This whole thread is amazing to me. I've tested Torque on several systems, and the only systems that have had problems are 4 and 8 MB video cards .I'll bookmark this thread for my own reference because if you're having a problem, someone with your same config is bound to have a problem and I'll end up having to support it or at the very least referring to this thread as a reference.

And by the way, K. Silver, 128 MB of VRAM is more than enough for TGE. I've run TGE on a desktop with an onboard SIS video card (crap) with only 16 MB of VRAM and it's fine. Your problem is not common.

These people found drivers to fix the problem on another card:
http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=27382
http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=32354

I had the same problem once with a laptop that had a weak graphics "card" built into the motherboard. I found that I was also not able to run Quake II or other OpenGL games while experiencing those problems with TGE. AFter going through the Quake documentation, going to the graphics card manufacturer's website and looking up stuff on openGL, and installing some OenGL support in addition to the newest drivers it all worked. Some of the older cards required seperate OpenGL support installed.

If you go to ATI.com, there is a utility you can download to remove everything ATI/radeon related. Then reboot and reinstall the catalyst driver software. Especially with radeon cards, if you install new drivers over the top of old drivers it can have a cow sometimes... comletely removing the old drivers is required before installing the new ones you want to test out.

K. Silver, I'm not convinced that upgrading any of your hardware is necessary, as it is all much more powerful than TGE needs.

I originally tested the demo on a P2 400 with 128 Mb RAM and a Rage Pro card with just 8Mb VRAM, and although some of the menu text was impossible to read, the program itself ran fine. Switching to a 16 Mb card solved the menu problem.

One of the systems I've run the demo on has Radeon 9100 onboard graphics, and the drivers have been upgraded 2 or 3 times. The process usually goes more smoothly if you uninstall all existing ATI software (using the add/remove program option in settings, control panel) first.

Once we had to revert to using older drivers due to the newest ones causing problems, which is why I suggested trying that too. A couple of times DirectX did not acknowledge the change, but that was solved by reinstalling it.

I re-installed the Diamond/Stealth/ATI Radeon 9250 onto my board....

I have uninstalled all ATI software with the control panel Uninstall feature.

Next, I attempted to install the drivers from the disk. I get my favorite error: "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software."

Well, I do have the card installed. I have DirectX 9.0 installed. I am running Windows XP Pro. I am totally confused. I have seen this error so much that it is immediate call for heart medicine. Just kidding, but it does annoy the Dickens out of me because of its totally useless nature.

Any suggestions?

~Silver Mane

Note: Here is a bit of trivia.... I googled the two words "ATI" and "frustrating." I came up with no less than 207,000 results! Youch! Apparently I am not alone in ATI's attempt at frustrating their customers!

First of all, ground/earth yourself by touching the metal case with the PC plugged in but with the power off. Then try removing the card and cleaning the contacts and slot. Ensure that any plug-in chips are seated correctly.

If it is a PCI card, placing it in another slot may help.

When replacing it, check that it is seated correctly in the slot, if it is not you may be able to adjust the position of the motherboard or the L-shaped plate that holds the card in.

If that does not help you might want to consider testing it in another machine, to rule out the possibility of it being a faulty card.

I switched back to my ATI Radeon 9200 128M which is an AGP card. I stripped out the old drivers and downloaded the Omega batch.

While using the PCI 256M Radeon card, I am certain it was seated correctly although I did not try other slots seeing that the errors I was having the most difficulty with were the same on both cards.

One of the difficulties I have been having is not being able to change my display settings. Once I replaced my drivers with the Omega batch, I have been able to change my display settings (some relief there). I am not certain what this is indicative of, exactly, but I thought I should include the problem.

I also downloaded an OpenGL driver from the ATI control panel. The first option (normal) would not load, so I tried the second option (Counter-Strike) which accomplished nothing.

When attempting to open "any" Torque demo software, a small, DOS screen opens, the cursor blinks and the entire screen goes blank. The screen changes a bit... as if trying to load then, eventually, returns to the main screen with the DOS screen still up. Shortly thereafter, I get a virtual memory error. Also, my computer seems to be working on a process although the only process that seems to be taking the processing power is the normal idle process, though it is working at between 85% and 98%. This has been what the demos have been doing since the I downloaded the first one. I have downloaded 4 demos and they all respond identically.

I have tested both my 128M Radeon and my 256 Radeon as well as a Maddog video card, none of them have been able to load the demos.

Again, my m/b is a Gigabyte 7N400 Pro 2, 512M RAM, 2 hard drives... 120G and 120G capacities. One other thing: I did impose on my son and ask him to download a demo... He had no difficulties so I know there isn't something unusual about our connection that is stopping me from getting a good file. We're on a router from the same cable modem. Unfortunately, his machine is so completely different than this one that comparing the two in order to isolate the problem is not realistic.

I appreciate all the help, you guys.... Even if I still have to start from scratch.

Is the problem related to your motherboard and/or your AGP port? If you tried two different cards and NEITHER of them worked, that sound really suspicious.

The Radeon 9200SE is AGP, the Radeon 9250 is PCI. Neither are successful at allowing the demos to play.

Have you installed the compatability drivers from Windows Update?

If so, switch to VGA 640x480x16 and uninstall your ATI drivers. Then install the official drivers from ATI and reselect your card. Reboot and retry.

I wonder why this thing double posts.....? Probably because when I refresh, it resends the data.... even the post. That must be it.
