I need website advice

by Chris Labombard · in General Discussion · 09/22/2005 (11:29 am) · 17 replies

Hey guys.

Now that I have the Spunky Games site up to snuff, I want to get the Basic Bob site improved.

The old site popped up in a new window and it kinda sucked. But I don't want to get too far on the new one without consulting you folks first.

Tell me what you guys think of the new Basic Bob test site. Should I leave it popping in the main sites iframe or move it out ? Does the design look ok ? The second iframe will be encased in a blue border like the banner.

Go to games -> Click Basic Bob: Island of misfits.

All suggestions are welcome.

Much better than the old one... Though I'll have to wait to run it on my laptop after work (work pc resolution is bad)... though still a lot of frames, a lot of people dislike frames

Using frames in a web site is very, oh, 1998ish :)

Get a decent CMS, and a design that portrays professionalism. Its worth the extra 2 hours.

Also, you might think about using basicbob.spunkygames.com for the game site.

Chris - I was using basicbob.spunkygames.com for the site.

I was just trying to find out if I should keep the site in the main sites iframe or move it out into its own (pop up) window ?

EDIT: In fact it still is set up as a subdomain.

What is CMS ? Google didnt return anything usable.

IFrames are ugly and usually look a bit different between web browsers. You should think about linking it out of the frame. Otherwise the site fits the games style and is a good direction to go. When people visit your site they should get a feel for what you product is loike as well. A crappy website usually lead people to beleive that your game is crappy as well. Looks good but in my opinion i would get rid of the iFrame.

Great. Yes I think I am going to remove it from the iframe.

A CMS stands for content management system. That is a script that lets the viewers to register and become users to recieve special news reports, etc. An example script is Mambo Open Source:

Ya, Mambo is great, but the dev team left and is now focusing on Joomla, which is everything Mambo was as of last release, plus the new core features... Joomla is free from a lot of the constraints Miro was begining to push onto mambo.

Yay for mambo. You both beat me to suggesting it.
I haven't seen joomla yet.

Chris, it doesn't take much time at all to get it up and running. Dedicate an evening to it and you'll be fine. :]

Ya, and if your host has Fantastico, its a 3 click install.

It does :)

However, beta testing is taking priority.

Is it important enough to do before I release Basic Bob? or can I leave it until after ?

Ok. The Basic Bob website is up now.

Please voice your opinions. I still haven't gotten around to setting up CMS.

The Basic Bob site you now have up, I think, is much better than your old one.
It looks alot more professional - than your old one, and it gives Basic Bob a better image as well.

The Basic Bob site is much better now... Only thing I'd suggest is to make the Basic Bob logo smaller, since it takes up a decent ammount of screen space, especially on my low res work pc =/

A big thing to look at is the top bar in the Garage Games site, with a log and menu it still takes up very little screen real estate

Mat - that is a good idea. I will consider cutting it in half or so.

I love the look, especially for the logo style and game style, site seems to fit with it, just the title bars on the basic bob site and main site take up a bit too much space, on my low res work pc the main site title bar takes about half of what I can view... a good thing I was reminded of once was that viewers do not like to scroll, so if they have to scroll to get info that will interest them then thats bad. So basically make as much info fit in the initial viewable area, at least enough to interest people :)
