IGF bets?

Taking bets on category winners in IGF. Perfectly ignorant bets are ok! Not necessarily what you think are the best games, but which ones you think will win. (like an Oscar pool).
Here's the full listing of games:
www.igf.com/2006entrants.shtml
My picks:
Grand Prize: Darwinia
Innovation in Visual Art: Darwinia
Innovation in Audio: Bubble Symphony (though I've never actually seen it, just from the description)
Innovation in Game Design: Darwinia
Technical Excellence: Darwinia
Best Web Browser Game: Alter Ego
Audience Award: Darwinia
Other notable mentions:
Ocular Ink
DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold
Trash
I though Chronic Logic was submitting Golf? but I don't see it on the list, though I would have picked it for Visual Art
(And I would love it if...
Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa was a finalist...
though I don't think it's fair or wise to place bets on your baby)

You claim you were asking who "will" win ...not who you think "should" win...and yet you nominated games that were not even applicants. That's not logical.
You say you like the Padres but you would not bet on them. This is becuase you are familiar with that team...so you know they are not contenders. But then you admit you have not even played the Toruqe based games submitted...so how can you count them out or immediately assume they are not on the same level of quality?
Your predicting Bubble Symphony for Innovation in Audio but have not played the game. So I guess what you mean is Innovation In Describing Audio.
The only way I can interpret your post that makes sense is to read it like this "isn't it a shame that the games that will win will be those that are the most popular right now instead of those that actaully are best?"
Was that the general thrust?

I picked games that weren't actually submitted because I was confused. I thought they were and they had the qualities that would typically win awards.
I picked Bubble Symphony because it was the only one that used Audio as the key point of innovation in the game. Again, a silly guess, like the Oscars.
Rumble Box is really cool. I just played it last night. Very very slick. And the pace of the game is great. I had trouble seeing my character when things got really hectic, but I think that's part of the point. Nice music and UI too.
Seriously guys, relax. I am not insulting anyone's game. I was just trying to have a fun discussion about indie games in general, not just Torque games. Yes it's a shame that many cool games may not get recognized but that's not what this was about.
I have no idea what goes on inside the head of the people who judge the Oscars or the IGF. But it's fun to speculate. This thread is no longer fun, and that's too bad.

If you went to a bunch of Oscar-possible actors and said "Lets bet on who will win", they would probably say the same thing this board did. An Oscar pool is between people who are not actually being nominated for the award. AFTER the nominations are announced, then the pools begin. In this case, the pool may be starting too early, before we know which games are actually going.
Anyway, thanks for the kind words about Rumble Box. I don't know if it's award-worthy, but I'm still crossing my fingers... :)

I understood what you were trying to do, but I think some people didn't like the idea of having their submission challenged. People are being a bit insecure about it, but think about it this way:If you went to a bunch of Oscar-possible actors and said "Lets bet on who will win", they would probably say the same thing this board did. My second post was just expressing confusion at your logic. I guess understand now where you are coming from...except we all still need to take time to play some of the games to have any idea right? Even when ppl pick Oscar winners they still have seen these actors and acrtresses in movies over the year...they have *some* point of reference. All we have are descriptions of games will get a chance to play some of the competition.
To have some fun we can start by playing each other's games...so...anyone here in GG community who has submitted a game to IGF...if you have a link to a version of your game we can play...post it here.
If you want to play my game, which is TGE based, Sign up for the Flash Bios Open Beta. I don't ask your email so I can't spam you or give it away!
I can't wait to check out Wildlife Tycoon. Even if you cant make a version available freely to download I'm sure I'll be seeing it at IGC.

I had no negative emotional reaction to it at all. You can see my first post is going along and making light of the situation, poking fun at the indie submission with the 1.2 million $US budget. I found that hilarious...esp as it seems to be legit! My second post was just expressing confusion at your logic. @Andy - this would have been a fun thread. I would have enjoyed trying to figure out who's going to win. Not that it really matters, which is what is fun about trying to guess.

So, what is the point of this contest?@Andy - this would have been a fun thread. I would have enjoyed trying to figure out who's going to win. Not that it really matters, which is what is fun about trying to guess.

Trying to figure out who will win a contest is just like trying to figure out 'who done it' in a mystery or like playing poker. It's never really about what is happening on the surface. It's the little details like the judges and the other players that you use to figure it all out. That's just fun to do. I don't gamble myself, but I enjoy playing poker and I like trying to figure out 'who done it'. It's just fun. A thinking man's game.

Perhaps the conversation still has legs in it though? I think I will post a new thread to see if people would like to talk about the games.
09/23/2005 (11:37 pm)
@Paul - One of the reasons I started this thread was so that I could maybe hear about some submissions that I hadn't heard before. I also knew that starting it here on GG would skew towards games that ARE Torque games, which is cool, since I'd like to know more about the Torque games that were entered. What I really wanted to do was discuss the games, though, and not the semantics of the question.Perhaps the conversation still has legs in it though? I think I will post a new thread to see if people would like to talk about the games.

I really like this community and I support it but it's more because of the people and not because of the technology it's based on. I just find it to be a shame when someone is so biased twards something, they can't see the truth or can't respect another person's opinion. Support your community and be proud or whatever you need to do but be real and honest with yourself at the same time. Not every game made with TGE is great and not every game made outside of GG is garbage. But one more thing, Andy, next time play the games before you decide who you think will win and why.

I think some of you (L. Foster mainly) are being rediculous about who this man thinks will be a finalist or winner in the IGF. So he didn't pick any Torque based games. So what. There's a huge list of entries in this IGF. Starting in the "numbers" and ending at "W". Of all those games, how many do you think could possibly be made from Torque? Less than 5 or 10%? Other people and engines make great games too. Maybe Torque based games are the best, maybe they're not, but that's his opinion. So your asking this man to be biased twards Torque games and lie to himself and to you about what title he thinks will win, and rip his head off when he doesn't?? I really like this community and I support it but it's more because of the people and not because of the technology it's based on. I appreciate the defense Ajari -- and I've been playing as many games as I can -- at least half of the games that are submitted aren't even available for download yet, including my own. I did make an effort to go back and play some of the Torque games mentioned after I started this thread. I was really impressed by Rumble Box and Flash Bios. But there are 118 games submitted and I'm not a judge, so it's hard to get to all of them.
