Everquest 2's combat downgrade

by Vashner · in General Discussion · 09/15/2005 (1:55 pm) · 9 replies

These guys at SOE are something special. Well they have a new expansion Desert of Flames for Everquest 2.

They are putting in a quote "combat upgrade".. which I jokingly call combat downgrade.

I don't see how people can put 4-8 hours a day or more into this game. The ones that play it as
much as a full time job? hahah they just made the game HARDER to level.

They increased the lvl cap to 60 from 50.. but they nerf all classes power.

What does this mean? It means you paid 30+ bucks to get about the same level of power
you already had.

PURE GENIUS. SOE might as well ship a dried turd in the box.

Casual gamers are ignored. As they try to force one game model for all users.

/rant off.

These games are so strangling each other out. It's all very Highlander, there can be only one.

We have some really cool casual and hardcore stuff in Minions of Mirth. It's really turning into a nice mix of Diablo/Everquest/Morrowind with sprinkles.

To be honest it's not harder to level, I am a necromancer at level 32 and I got nerfed big time. The game is harder, my pet has less hit points so he takes more damage, I can't load a ton of spells up at the same time to really rip apart mobs and drain my pet like a battery for literally no downtime.

It did change, and it changed alot. The balance is not done and will not be for months, if you played any MMO and they had a combat change you would see it takes some time to tweak.

Leveling was too fast also and really still is. When I am level 30 and can play for 3-4 hours and level thats just too darn fast. You don't get the time to really enjoy the game.

I also loved re-learning my character and making him potent again which can easily be done. Each class now has it's own powers that are definitive and really make them stand out from the crowd.

Give it at least a few days or weeks until you get your new groove and you will see.

You see your opinion about the 3-4 hours is how you like gamestyle. You think everyone else is going
to share your game style and what you think might be a level? Nope...

3-4 hours and "you don't get the time to enjoy the game"..

How much time do you need? A full feature film is less than 2 hours.

Everyone's just trying to avoid being the next one to hit the ZAPPER.

The problem with MMO's is that the amount of time they consume (DEMAND!) means they are highly competitive. To be "uber" in one game means you don't have time to play in another one.

I think there's room for a few casual MMO's out there... but the big money-makers are going to be limited to the "top three" and then a handful of others struggling for life beneath them.

"Causual MMO"? I can think of one: "Puzzle Pirates". It costs 12-13 USD a month, but you don't HAVE to pay to play. You just have to pay to get a pretty outfit, a better sword (for the swordfighting puzzle), access some of the more advanced puzzles (navigation and cannon loading), get promoted in your crew, and so on. But if you don't want to pay anything, you're not required to.

It's in pure Java (iirc), which I found pleasantly suprising. How's that for cross-platform?

Not exactly "hard-core", but quite a bit of fun. It's a good "set the hook" MMO for a friend/SO/spouse that isn't into that sort of thing. ;)

Well lets look at it from the hardcore example I gave earlier, 3-4 hours a level means 150-200 hours of total game time until you top out your char, twiddle your thumbs, get bored and leave the game.

Heck even zelda a link to the past was 80 hours gameplay and that was a singleplayer RPG. 150-200 hours isn't all that much either the end game would come too quick.

This is leveling hardcore with how the game was. Now it is slower to level by far with some more downtime. To tell you the truth I missed the med downtimes, while it took me alot longer to level it game me time to read forums here, chat on irc or do something actually semi productive rather then stare at screen click 8 buttons in the same order everytime, watch mob die, loot and repeat.

Yea nothing like killing the same monster's 500 times to level that is Great.

when they come up with more versatility to bring the fun, I might play it again.
you walk around and people are camped killing spawning monsters.
waiting .... for the next spawn so they can get thier xp.

it gets dull.

City of Heroes caters to casual gamers, but it's not a casual game.

The ones I am thinking of include Adventure Quest, Kingdom of Loathing, A Tale in the Desert, and several others.

Man I remember playing CoH and doing some of the epic battle lines, took like 4-6 hours to do so I did them on the weekend.

Welllll lets just say once I said lets do one during the week it was about 5:30 and I figured ok done by 9:30 or 11:30 always go to bed at 12 I am golden.

I recall going to bed at 2:45 because the last boss just kept wiping our group to shreads lol that was around the time I left CoH and moved to EQ2.
