Torque Engine and historical strategic/ tactical game

Hi all,

Being extremely new to the world of game design and after reading a number of books on design and programming I have realised that finding a good game engine is absolutely the right way to achieve my ambition of turning an idea into reality. The question is, what is the right engine?

The type of game I'm endeavouring to design would be one covering a particular historical period and would be played at both a strategic and tactical level.

It would contain a main map divided into hundreds of provinces and have turns completed at strategic level corresponding to one day of game time. Players would control the military, economic, poltical and and social policies of their chosen nation including moving armed forces around their controlled areas, developing regional infrastructure and if encountering an enemy resolving combat at tactical level on a hex map.

Could someone comment on how feasible such an idea is with products available through Garage Games. I have conducted a number of searches of the forum using phrases such as "Wargame", "Table top" etc but have not really found whether anyone has attempted such a project using any of the available products.

I'd really appreciate some guidance since discovering this site, I have been extremely impressed by the vast knowledge and professionalism of the people on these forums.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Tim

We're a team of 8 people who are working on a turnbased strategy game with 500 regions, 90 cities and 20+ unittypes. So yes, it's possible to do a game like that with Torque. But if your new to game design and programming / art I wouldn't recommend starting with a big game. It's easy to start developing a game, but difficult to finish it. Instead get the Torque 2D engine, and develop your skills by developing small games, like Pacman, Snake, Space War and others that can be completed in a few weeks. Then gradually make bigger ones.

TGE could be used for a turn-based game if you want 3D. You could also do it in T2D, which probably would be easier. There's also The Battle for Wesnoth, which is an open-source turn-based game that you could build from.

Before you go even one step further, ask youself this question: Are you prepared to spend the next 5-10 YEARS putting in massive amounts of work on this game - to the exclusion of your social life if you are unable to work full-time?

Otherwise, save yourself the time and don't even bother to start.

If you can't make yourself not try it, the smart route is (as Joakim suggests) to start with a very small game or (as Thomas suggests) to mod an already existing one. Both are feasible. The other is - regardless of your tools - probably not.
