Western Themed Games

Why don't we see many Western themed games?

I've been pondering this idea for a while now. I like RPGs and was thinking that there aren't really any that have a western theme to them. So then I started thinking that, that can be an edge to making one. Then again there are games out there, and they aren't too popular. Why aren't they popular?

It is different, when you look at all the popular MMOs and RPGs out today. I've heard people say they want some thing different than midevil/fantasy MMOs, but are we ready for that change?

I rented one of these games yesterday, and was bored of it after just a few hours. I know it wasn't the theme to the game, it was just how it played, but it got boring fast.

I don't know, I'm just rambling, but what do you think of Western themed games?

@ Randy, nope. I get my first name from one of my great grand mothers, she was Scottish, and my last name from my crazy @$$ fathers side of the family....guess thats where I get the crazyness from as well.

Guess thats what you get when you mix Scottish and Irish with a little Cherokee.

We're working on a Western FPS over at Scryer Games (www.scryergames.com). We're still very early in the development cycle. We have a great international team with some great professional talent.

No screen shots yet.

We're shooting for 15 maps in the first release (we'll scale it back if we need to - but that's the goal). We have the 15 maps we want to do chosen from the 36 original map ideas. I trimmed back the amount of weapons by half (original list was 104 guns and their varients - WAY too many).

What we're working on right now:
1. Two maps (chosen from the 15) for testing mechanics and weapons balance.
2. Structure Models.
3. Interface design prototype.

Anyway, come check us out and sign up on our forums. We'd appreciate suggestions and input.

On another small side note even though it's not a 3D thing, I am currently developing a 2D Western Themed Game at the moment. I'm using T2D, it's art style is simmilar to old style console RPG's (Eg semi topdown / angled camera) and it is a turn based, squad style game. Basic design and game info can be found at my blog here --> http://brainswamp.blogspot.com/ and hopefully in the next day or so I'll post another entry with some first inital screenies.

Cheers.

We are doing a Western MMO using Torque. Check out our web site for more info:

www.wildwestonline.com/

We'll actually be delivering Wild West Online: Gunfighter first (around the end of the 2007), followed by the full blown MMO.

Hey Ed, how long have you had a Western MMO idea in the works? I have had the same thought numerous months, just never could get the staff together for it. Finally have pulled together a small team, covering the engine, sounds, artwork and level playability assets. I have created a GDD for it, some simple sketch work of town layouts, ideas of mini games inside the game, and mission files covering 17 old west towns.

If it sounds interesting send a reply.

We've had a team working on the game for over a year -- our Wild West Online: Gunfighter game is entering alpha this week. Nearly all of the art and mission assets for the Gunfighter game will be used in the MMO, so this first game is a direct lead-in to the the MMO.

I'll contact you directly to discuss possible collaboration.

Do you have a promo site for your game yet?

I just recently got a few people together as a skeleton crew. I mentioned creating a promo site, preferably asap. No luck as of yet but once we have one I will be sure to send you the link via forum or pm. If it serves as any motivation, the idea is awesome, honestly I am surprised that it hasn't been developed sooner.

Have you laid the foundation down with just torque script, or have you combined c++ / c#? What language is your studio using for back end server?

We've stuck with mostly Torque script for the client, with a few modest C++ mods (and more to come). Our server is completely custom Java. For the MMO we will be running minimal functionality through a modified Torque Server, but sticking with our custom Java server infrastructure for everything not already provided by Torque.

Alright sounds good, I was asking because I know that Torque Script or Torque Network Library has the tendency to limit the amount of players, but if you run it straight Java you should be able to take on thousands of players at once if I presume correctly. We are currently using Python and Torque Script with some minor C++ modifications when necessary.
