Jon I have been developing using the torque engine demo exclusively for quite some time now. the demo includes all the functionality of the sdk with the difference being the lack of the source code for recompiling and making core engine changes. i would suggest downloading and messing around with the demo. not only do you get to sample the engine quality, but you can check out the scripting language and in-game editors. honestly, you can create a quality game using just the demo.(not for sale though)

I think picking up the Torque Game Engine SDK "Indie" License, only $100, as stated above would be your best choice. This way you have access to the source code.www.garagegames.com/products/torque/tge/

1. Great way to learn about TGE's scripting and built in world/terrian and GUI editors.
(yes, I can only think of one.. no doubt more poeple will post "pro's")
Cons:
1. As you won't have the source, you will be limited to what features you can have in your game (you will find lots of changes are needed to the source to complete a game)
2. You don't get access to the TGE private forums.
3. You can't sell you're game as it's a mod of a GG product/demo (and you don't own a licence)
You can pick up TGE for $100 (unless you compan makes over $250,000 a year)
