Texture Mapping in 3D Max
by Ronald Andaya · in General Discussion · 07/25/2005 (12:37 am) · 13 replies
I'm running through the SimpleShape Tutorial for 3D Max 6. I am a rookie at that sw package, but I am familiar with other 3D sw such as Maya and XSI. So I followed the steps on the tutorial on Texturing the sphere. I exported .dts file into the same directory as the texture image. When I view the sphere in Show Tools, there is a sphere with NO texture. Can someone explain to me what I did wrong? Or if I missed a step.

Yes the texture is a power of 2. (256). I'm following this tutorial. http://www.garagegames.com/docs/tge/general/ch08s03.php
Let me know if you can figure out what I did wrong?
Ron
@Bauer,
I used an exporter. Follow this tutorial. http://www.garagegames.com/docs/tge/general/ch08s02.php
If anyone gets this to work witht the texture let me know where i went wrong.

It should export alright if you follow the tutorial, you can always send me your files (my email can be found in my profile) and I'll have a look if you did something wrong.

I followed the tutorial and its exporting ok. Its just the texture won't show up on the sphere in Show Tools so I think it won't show it in the game. I think I'm doing something wrong in 3D Studio Max cuz the texture doesn't show up on there also before I export it. If you know how to texture in 3D Max, I can follow your steps instead of the tutorial. I'll email you my files so you can see where I went wrong.

Okay, the problem is as I figured pretty simple... You have to assign the material to your model. Select the model and click the "Assign material to selection" button in the material editor.

Usually just grabbing the script in windows and dropping it in the max viewport will do it.

Depends how the script is set up.Usually just grabbing the script in windows and dropping it in the max viewport will do it.

I'm trying to install the adjustLODs.mcr from the max filepack. Do I just drop it into the viewport and expect something to happen or do I go under MAXscript and simply run the script. It also says I should click the AdjustLODs button afterwards. Where is that located? I'm not used to MAX yet. Just started using it yesterday so I'm a bit confused by its setup and interface.

You need to add the button to a toolbar, check the max documentation (specifically in the chapter "Customizing the user interface") how to do that.

Quote:Do I just drop it into the viewport and expect something to happen or do I go under MAXscript and simply run the script.Either should work. But nothing "visible" will really happen other than that the script gets installed.

Sorry but I don't have any kind of max documentation. For some reason my helpfiles do not work either. I've also searched the net for anything but nothing comes up.

The software comes with a couple of huge books with all the documentation, if you lost yours call discreet and I'm sure they can arrange a replacement.

"Renumber ..." and "Embed Shape"
They are in the DTS-Utility-Menu (Look at the hammer symbol)
So after finding this, all things worked. But this is just my case. I think there should be a better explanation about where you find "Renumber .."-Button in the Documenation of Torque.
Thanks and just for the moment

Ok, the main problem about the documentation is, that is really hard to find "Renumber ..." and "Embed Shape"
