3D Backgrounding Throughput?

How about 3D backgrounding throughput?
It's where objects can be placed way in the background but they show up in the foreground (useful for adding some nice, realistic details, like ants walking on the surface of the ground and such).
Does anyone think this could be modded into the engine? Thoughts?
