Rules of Particle Emitter Graphics?

Anyone know what the technical rules are of the graphics used for Particle Emitters? Things such as bitdepth, color types, pallete, etc.? I've made a few .PNG's that display fine, but others that don't display at all and can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong in the graphics...
