Internet TV questions

by Jason Correia · in General Discussion · 07/11/2005 (10:31 pm) · 6 replies

Just a couple of questions that me and my brother were wondering if this is possible, and if it is possible and gets enough traffic it would be a great marketing tool to show latest game demo videos
just an idea.

1. is it possible to create a TV like presence on the web?
2. and if you can is it possible to do it in real-time?
3. what kind of software/equipment would be needed?
will post more questions when they come up ,replies would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Winamp TV/Shoutcast TV has a good system. If you want to do WebTV. MANY people (that i know of) have Winamp, and creating a Winamp TV Stream, with ads, and game reviews and stuff, like an online G4, i think would be awsome and bring people in. I just got a Media Center set up, so i'd put it on my tv.

Depends on what you're trying to broadcast, i.e do you have full rights to it, and secondly do you have money to spend to make this a reality since most webserver hosts, either won't let you stream from thier servers or charge an extra fee for streaming video sites.

If you have the money to do this, and the rights contact me, smorrey@gmail.com and I'll explain further.

1. how much would such a project cost?
2. like the first post questions what kind of software/equipment would be needed to do this?

@dreamer the issue about the servers I found this it's for mac but because it's open source there could be developers working on it for windows [don't know if this is useful]

as for licensing, which would probably big one of the biggest problems trying to find media to put on the site but thats what marketing/PR is for, but this is just an idea that me and my brother had but if it is possible and at a reasonable cost to startup we might try it :-)

well thanks in advance to any other replies

I have done this thing before for lot of stuff, like for broadcasting live soccer matches over the internet. Its doable and its easy, the problem you are gonna face is Cost. TV streaming costs a lot of money in terms of bandwith rest everything is peanuts. The easiest way for you to carry on with your idea will be SHoutcast. Shoutcast is a really good server for streaming Audio or Video. Using Shoutcast to act as a server you will get an encoder that will encode your stream and send it to the shoutcast server which in turn will send the stream to the user connected. There are tools available to do that.

Look here for more information on streaming video over the internet.

The information is same for Streaming Saved video or Live video however for live video some other steps need to be taken but if you want to like Add effects etc to live video like they do for News broadcasting station when they have live news is bit difficult and will cost an arm and a leg for the system how ever i found something at engadget. havent tried it but looks promising. This is like a small version of what is used in Real World TV Stations hell a powerfull system none the less. Really like what i am looking at in regard to that system and who knows it might be a way into broadcast industry for low level Broadcasters or one without huge budget. Trust me when i say 6,000 is nothing for a system like this where as the real equipment can go into 100,000 with a blink. Also you might want to check out this site for more information http://www.scvi.net/index.htm

Anything else just feel free to ask.

Hope this helps
Cheers
