********EDIT new site for them all here ---> www.users.on.net/~symes/gamedev/videotuts/videotuts.html ***********
Ok here goes another tutorial hot of the press.
For those just wanting the torrent, it is found on torrent spy here torrentspy.com/search.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=351335&query=blender
This is part one of a series of tutorials on how to use Blender. This series is going to take you through how to create a medeival axe weapon for use in game.
*** This is aimed at beginners. If you know how to use Blender then you don't need this tutorial. ***
Nothing fancy........just the fact you'll be able to use open source Blender to create game models!!!
The catch is.....
The file is ~67.3 megs (well it is 27minutes long at 800x600), and I don't have enough room to host the "seed" avi on my ftp. Hence I'm going to try the "Torrent" (muuhahaha).
So if you don't know what Bittorrent is then I suggest you go to azureus.sourceforge.net/ and download a great program called Azureus.
Once installed (don't forget to open up the needed ports and install safepeer (built in plugin) etc) or you won't get good speeds.
Then goto torrentspy.com/search.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=351335&query=blender
And download the torrent file (small text file) and open it up with Azureus. Then you will be downloading the avi from peers.
Note, at first this will be slow, as I am the only person on the internet hosting the file on my 12kb/s upstream connection, but as soon as someone else downloads at least 64kb, then you will have two people to download from, and so on and so on.
If anyone wants to host it on FTP anywhere on the internet, please do and just tell me where it is to be found.
BTW if that link doesn't work, just goto www.torrentspy.com and search for "blender" or "Dingo_aus" etc.

What codec is used in this .avi? I can't seem to play it with either Media Player or Quicktime.

I'm not the producer, but the download may be corrupt on my site (www.rstralberg.com)
if you downloaded from there. I will check that...

*edit* Ok, I just redownloaded it and it still won't work - maybe it is something on your end after all ;)
I will try the torrent link listed above when I get home from work tonight (no torrent loader here)

Just a note to torrent users - I couldn't find a torrent tracker hoster easily, so I just used Azureus' decentralised tracker. That means the only Azureus is the only Bittorrent client that can use th tracker. Sorry if this has caused any problems but this is the first time I've tried to host on the torrent and I am just learning how it works. If there is a host that can host my trackers easily, then please tell me about it :)

The codec is Xvid (an open source MPEG-4 codec) which can be found here for Windows users download.divxmovies.com/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe Just download that and install the exe for it to work in media player, winamp etc.Just a note to torrent users - I couldn't find a torrent tracker hoster easily, so I just used Azureus' decentralised tracker. I can't download the torrent with either BitTornado or Azureus.
I tried to re-download it from Roland's site and it's only 15MB now rather than the 67MB it was earlier.
:(

Ok, I'm stumped. I can't play it when downloaded from Roland's site, even with the Xvid code installed.I can't download the torrent with either BitTornado or Azureus.

Got it now! Nigel, that is an awesome tutorial for beginners! Can't wait for part 2 ;)

I'll try to get round to creating part 2 tonight (Australian time +10 GMT)
Part 2 involves using "The Gimp" (an open source competitor to Photoshop) to create a texture to apply to the axe. If you are using windows and you want to play around with it, head to gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html and download both the GTK+ 2 for windows and the Gimp for windows. If on Linux or Apple then go to www.gimp.org and follow the links.
BTW because I'm using Blender and Gimp which are cross-platform this tutorial is totally applicable to Linux and Windows and I think Apple as well (haven't checked that one)
BTW if anyone has a suggestion they would like me to do, please email me or post it in the forums.
So far I'm thinking for the next ones to be exporting with collision detection boxes (rather simple really) and exporting with multiple textures applied (hopping this is technically feasible).
If you have something else, please post, and don't forget there are lots of general blender video tutorials on the net. Go to www.blender3d.org and find them there.
Nigel
P.S. A huge thank you to Roland who has help with hosting and suggestions etc etc!

When I first tried Blender I took one look at it and gave up (seems to have a steep learning curve)... but i've learnt lots from your video.
Can't wait until part 2!

Sorry guys, I recorded part 2 twice tonight, but for some reason the sound went all bad in spots on each attempt. I attempted to edit it out but that just resulted in a worse situation. I'll have to have another go tomorrow night.

So I have a final copy of part 2 ready to ship ;)
BTW it looks like this will be a three part series. So i'll wrap it up in the next one and start another are of blender after that.
Anyway, this one isn't really a blender tutorial (it shows how I use Gimp to make textures) but falls between two Blender tutorials so it still fits in the one series.
I'll post a torrent of it tonight (at ~10pm Australian time, in about 3 hours). Roland if you could host it please, that would be nice also :)

Ok finally, after recording it 4 times! It finally didn't corrupt the sound - I think the program I use to capture the video has issues with audio and gimp's windows. I don't know but it finally worked. So I have a final copy of part 2 ready to ship ;)

These are great! They showed me some things I just could not figure out. Thanks. Hey are you going to do some more advanced tutorials to cover the major features of the exporter. I still do not know all that it can do, or how to do them. Thanks again,
Frank
