Flat colour textures

Hey all

Im working on a game that I want to have a comic-book like look to it. Not so much cell shading, but flat, solid-colour textures, sorta like playing a NES game. I have experimented a little with flat textures, but the results on the terrain at least, work quite ugly. The flat textures i think will work with models and shapes and such, as they will fit with the theme, its just the terrain im having trouble with. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that one of the reasons i choose to use flat, solid textures is because im horrid in art, both digital and hand :)

Thanks for any help

Greg, are you saying that you dont want the terrain to highlight and cast shadows, thus saving your terrain textures from any kind of color variation? Or does the problem lay with something else?

Adam, I never thought of that, because the shadows are infact, causing the colours to look ugly. Ill definatly look into that. But, without shadows, wouldn't the world seem to flat? You wouldn't be able to see the variations in hight.

Thanks!

Exactly, you wouldnt be able to see variations in height, which is why I was curious if thats what you actually meant.

If that is in fact what you wanted to do, you could texture the terrain with a single color texture, turn the ambient light of the sun way up to knock out the shadows, and then have the fog start right in front of the player. If im imagining this correctly, the fog would color the terrain farther away, allowing you to make out the terrain (sort of).

If this doesn't help, youd have to provide more information about what effect you want and what exactly the problem is, cause im out of ideas. :)

Adam, thanks for all of the help so far. I think I found a solution however. I played around with a couple different shades of green for my terrain colour. Then I created a custom detail map, grass leaves. The colour, combined with the detail texture, made the transitions between shadows and such much easier on the eyes, while maintaining my flat, cartoon-like look.

Again, Adam, thanks for the help
