PostgreSQL

Hey everyone.
This is my first forum post, but I've been reading every day for a few weeks now.
I'm looking to create a game where players can log into the server and access their characters (which are stored on in a postgreSQL database). Does anyone have any experience in programming Torque to work with postgres? I'm only using it because it's cheap and seems to work fine for most people that use it, but I couldn't find any mention of it on the forums, other than in passing.
Is MySQL worth the money? How much does it cost? Why would I use MySQL when I can get postgres for free?
I don't understand this server-side stuff. I was never taught network code or server administration in college.
Can anyone help clarify this for me?
Thanks!

Please try to avoid the religions aspects of either side and get down to the bottom line. Which is better, and why?

Thank you for both of these replies. These are some good resources for this type of thing. Should I run Linux or Windows for my server? Please try to avoid the religions aspects of either side and get down to the bottom line. Which is better, and why?
