How many team members?

by Mark Barner · in General Discussion · 07/03/2005 (7:15 am) · 32 replies

Just a poll to see what the average size of teams making games with TGE. One...two...or more people working on your game?

Our team is two. Both beginners.

Yes, to each their own. Two post above arent even close to flames, but just hit me the wrong way when taken together. Yes, more people has the potential for disaster. But not all of us can get "professional people" who will become instantly dedicated.

Im proud of my team. We work hard together and kid around with each other. While more members can mean "organizational noise" the key word is organization - having a plan, keeping people focused, allowing them personal growth, and communicating needs and expectations.

The mod scene (where I have built my team from) is notoriously flighty, but Ive gotten some amazing people to get involved and stick around. I can only work hard myself, give them the direction, discipline and organization they need to succeed and press on.

At PocketWatch Games, working on Wildlife Tycoon: Venture Africa we have:

1 full-time programmer/business/marketing/designer.

The rest work part time, although I suspect it seems more like full time to some of them...

-Modeler
-2d/web artist
-Animator
-Environmental Artist/Level Designer
-Musician/Sound Technician
-Writer/Poet

Luckily, buying Torque took care of most of the programming for me, so we can be a little light on the programming side of things.

I'd really love to start hiring full-time employees but I cant do that until I have some cash flow.

How many team members? MVP Online has 2 games being developed simultaneously, but most of us just spend time on 1 of them. Our team makeup is the following:

Core team members:

3 programmers
1 modder/scriptor
1 project lead/programmer
1 creative director
1 tester/design researcher/marketing intern

Extended team members (part-time or less) :
1 sound guy
3 mocap artists/animators
3 character artists/level builders
2 mocap actors

Others: (not really involved in game dev)
1 IT guy
1 CEO/President/Owner
1 Co-owner
2 Administrative Assistants
Sales Force (don't know how many)

No one mentioned the ultimate brute force tactic yet, so I will.

I'll take 1,000,000 monkeys, and one day have a masterpiece!

I made the mistake of joining a guy who was a writer. In other words, he wanted to come up with the ideas and have everyone else do the work. So it's just me at this point, also because no one else will join me. Anyone want to collaborate?

I always end up developing games on my own lately because other people will disappoint you both in programming skill and will disappoint with their doubtfulness of your great games ideas. You should go it alone if you have the skills and time because then you're always king of everything! : ) well actually I guess part time people are useful for saving time as long as you keep control of the overall vision of the game.

1 Scripter/producer/organizer
2 artists (both professional graphic artists with plenty of 2d/3d experience)

1 Coder/Artist/Programmer/Slave Driver(Me)
1 Programmer
1 2d Artists(texturer/concept)
1 Level designer
2 3d Model/Texture Artists
1 Animator (looking for this guy still, but may have it covered without him.)

Most of the guys are hard core Modders, so on our project we can get away with fewer people. The specs on the our game call for a minimum of 10.
