Torque in school

by Stefan Lundmark · in Torque Game Engine · 06/24/2005 (2:56 pm) · 8 replies

So, June is almost over and I found myself very bored and depressed. I went out to look for schools that had gameprogramming in focus.

Here's where things get interesting.. I found a school that claimed to be using Torque for their studies. It caught my interest immediatly, as that would boost my knowledge signifiantly, rather than just sit here and learn it all by myself, which tends to go slowly sometimes. And I love TGE/TSE, and to STUDY anything I love would be a dream.

Have anyone had any past experience with schools that use Torque? Good or bad?

Uhm. GameMaker, a privately owned school in Arvika.. I believe. Sounds very interesting (but a bit far for me).

I used Torque for my Senior Capstone project, but it wasn't school taught, kind of self taught really.

To be honest. You can probably teach yourself more about Torque in less time, for less money.

You are going to be seeing more and more of this--Torque is being adopted by an amazing number of schools, from the small game design colleges to major universities.

I'd say that depends. I've found that people work very differently in this way, personally I learn a whole lot more (and a LOT faster) by just thinkering with whatever I want to figure out myself but some people need the extra struction and direction a school can give you. You would learn a whole lot more than just torque too in a school like this (it's a two year course after all, going to be pretty boring to just sit around and figure out how torque work for 2 years =).

Anyway, I have no idea if GameMaker is good or not (I'm not a school sort of person, I've never been so I haven't really looked things up). But in either case you're too late. "Last day for application: 2005-06-03" (unless you already sent in an application that is).

Magnus, last day is 15th of July. Always been, the date you're reading is for the first application.
The second application is for reserved spots that get open again, for different reasons. :)

Chris, it won't cost me one penny. It's paid by taxes.

..im in a college games design course myself stefan... we are going to be using torque for our final year... i have been using it since b4 starting the course so im chuffed to have gotten a headstart...

as far as college courses go.. from the experience of the games courses i have been in (2 including this one) ...the quality of the course depends on the quality of the applicants.. its a kind of a knowledge pool among students, as the lecturers are generally swamped and find it hard to keep up to scratch with the new technology of the games industry...

i dont know if the college course itself has been worth it.. as in have i've learned more on my own or not... but the environment is worth it anyway.. if i wasnt at college i would be working fulltime, which is kinda like a train on rails.. you dont have time to think...

i would advise alligning yourself with the dedicated people who truly want to work if you do sign up...
