Crazy Classroom

I was thinking about a game where a school has a mini "war" between the grades and classes, where students made mini weapons out of rubberbands and paperclips, nothing lethal or seriously damaging, that can be found on the ground in the hallway or on a desk or in your backpack or something of that sort. I thought that this might not be a good idea because of the obvious legal complications. What do you think? Is the possibility of liability issues to great for this kind of game?

I dont think I would make it fps because of such stated reason, and you do have a good point about the hooker thing. thanks for the input

I would make it 3rd person so the game has more personality. You could peek around corners. The characters have to be cartoony and have big heads and I'd make a yellow light trail behind the speeding paperclip as it peggs the enemy. If you get an eye shot it's an instant kill or I would have it to where the blinded player must sit out 20 to 30 seconds longer. Power up's could be like a puffy winter jacket or shades and thick dork glasses that only last for a limited time. Be sure to have lots of different kids with different ethnic backgrounds and personalities.(jock, nerd, popular kid, cheer leader, bully, ect...) Just my thoughts of what I would like to play from a game like this.

Legal reasons? From who? Rubberbands and paperclips in a school filled with students...I'm no layer but I believe all those things are perfectly free and legal to combine and use in just about any fasion you can imagine. Go for it. Sounds like fun. I would make it 3rd person so the game has more personality. You could peek around corners. Check out the old Skool Daze games that were on the Spectrum many, many moons ago. They featured all sorts of school room japes and antics you could get upto. Might be worth investigating for 'research purposes'.

Hey, according to the school system... those items mentioned can be DANGEROUS weapons...... you can't even point your fingers like a gun anymore without some teacher flipping out and expelling the kid. Perhaps that's what he was thinking about "legal".

This sounds like a really good idea. I would build a prototype asap.

As an after thought, what do you guys think about online multiplayer, and how difficult is it to do that?

Don't forget spitwads + straws... and food fights in the cafeteria.

Personally, I wouldn't make it a game with killing. Maybe bruises, or food fights, things like that. I'm thinking "all in good fun" type play. Have it where you rack up points instead of kills.

There was some high school kids arrested for working on an FPS set in a school who were overheard talking about it by a teacher. I believe the police called the game a "terrorist training tool". I haven't heard if they got released or are awaiting trial.Personally, I wouldn't make it a game with killing. Maybe bruises, or food fights, things like that. Spitwads and straws are a must as well as i was thinking paper that can be crumpled in to balls or folded into paper airplanes and thrown. also i planned on not making it anything lethat and "keeping it g-rated" in a sense. what do you think about design, should i make it cel-shading because i think that a cel-shading game would get less of the whole "violent video game review" any other ideas for "weapons" would be greatly appreciated. thanks for all the input

I would say don't cel shade it. . . Keep it as realistic as possible, in that non realistic gameplay sense.

Haha ok, that makes sense, somewhat.

I still don't see how any legal problems could suface from a game like this. Especially if it's done in a comical cartoon fasion. I feel that making the characters look as real as possible would put too much of a serious tone on the game. I'm thinking Charlie Brown looking characters. Big heads, little bodies, light hearted fun.

I couldn't even imagine a game where kids use rubber bands, paper clips, and spit wads as being serious, realistic, or dangerous with killing. When I said "instant kills" I meant "instant out". Meaning one hit and you sit out for 30 seconds longer than usual before you respawn. As a matter of fact, it would be cool if a hit kid would just sit down and hold his head or whatever part of his body got hit until his time is up and he simply stands back up and is back in the game. I know that this isnt the place to post this but this seems to be getting the most hits, so i have a question. i have sent an email with this concern but its been a couple days and they havent written back, so here goes. I tried to start making this game with the book i bought (3d game programming all in one) and when i went to run my first program, the one it walks you through, i got a whole bunch of error messsages. first off it says that i dont have a bunch of fiels that im assuming were supposed to come on the disk with the book. then it tells me that i dont have any display device (D3D, OpenGL, or Voodoo) and then when it tries to open the file, I get an error message, the one where it says windows encountered a fatla problem bla bla bla. please someone help me out with this, its got me on my last nerve.

As for Ajari's comments... Sitting out for 30 seconds is not a good idea. I don't even like to sit out for the 3 seconds you have to in Halo2. Maybe making the outed player wear a dunce cap would be a better idea. Makes it easier to see them, and then they look goofy.
I agree with making them funny.. definately.... but don't cel shade it... There is something to be said for realistic looking comedy (AKA juxt)
