Radiant support question

by Jesse McKinney · in Artist Corner · 06/10/2005 (8:59 pm) · 7 replies

Was wondering if there would be any updated support for the GTKRadiant map2dif. I have been using map2dif .95alpha and haven't herd anything as to any updated version that will support Radiant .map files. It would be nice if there was an update as there is a few bugs in .95 such as portals not compiling.

Current word is that Radiant due to it's extreme pricetag for commercial use ($10,000 or something like that), will probably not ever be supported. However Torque Constructor is coming soon, which looks like a GREAT alternative.

In the meantime you might want to check out blender and the new .dif exporter if you are seeking a FOSS solution.

Map2Dif Alpha ver 0.96

Radiant is $5000 for commercial use. Constructor is coming along quite nicely:

@Matthew, posting screenshots isn't very fair... I'ld pay good money just to get a chance to capture that screeny. :)

Beautiful program though.

Are those menus based on code from blender at all? They look very blenderesque, also I see some 3DSMax inspiration in there.

I'd say it was more from ShowTool then anything else

Dave took a lot of his UI inspiration from LightWave for both the Show Tool and Constructor. Wait until you see how you can set up the constructor UI. He went all out with UI styles, not visual "theme" styles, but the way you can set up your windows, toolboxes...it will be far above, and beyond current CSG editors with Dave on the UI and Matt on the CSG stuff. Dave is the current, undisputed master of Torque UI right now, though we have an intern now that is looking to give him a run for his money.

Hmm, I remind me of a marketing goblin in that last bit...hmmm

Our game is going to be non commercial and freely downloadable so the price tag does not apply to us. Its only if you are going to be using the game to make ANY kind of money (commercial use) do you have to pay for licensing.

BTW Constructor is looking very nice. Any chance on support for patch surfaces as in most new Q3 style games?

Patches require engine changes, not just map changes. I wouldn't be surprised if bezier patches are included in a later release though. Things like pathed interiors and such are ahead of them on the list, I believe. There is a sphere and an arch primative, though...

You don't have to pay for Radiant if it's a non-commercial product (though you should make sure to check the licensing as I'm not sure if specific engines are mentioned within the license--ie. you can only use engines licensed from id, etc). It's been forever since I looked at it closely since it's been irrelevant to me for years now.
