Maya vs Milkshape

Hello
I am new the torque engine but have now got a grasp on the engine after going through various chapters in Ken Finney's book 3GPAI1. Now I am a programmer and not an artist, but I can create some interesting models. Being new to this game programming era, I am having a tough time deciding on a modeling software package. I have Maya 5 Unlimited and can do some basic modeling, but the book goes over Milkshape 3D, should I go ahead and purchase it, because the trial period has expired and I really didn't get a chance to use, or stick with Maya and expanded on that package, would it be a waste of money to have them both.

If you can afford MAYA then for $30, I would still give Milkshape a tryout first.

If you are just learning to model, then Milkshape is probably a better choice for you. It keeps things simple. If you outgrow Milkshape then move over to Maya / 3dsmax.

Whoaaaa... heretic ! You do have Maya and yet you are talking about other packages ? If you've paid for that piece of soft you must be really disapointed to look at anything else. Seriously speaking to me even putting Maya and Milkshape side by side does not make much.. sense.

Actually milkshape is $25 for the registration, it's nice and with the format conversions and the exporter worth the $25 no matter which package you mainly go with. It even has a directx LOD tool that can help with creating different LOD's.

No, I have an academic version costed around $300. I know there is a huge difference, the reason I asked the question is because I don't want to buy any more software when what I have will suffice. Maya's learning curve may be steeper but I have nothing but time to learn it. I even went and bought the book "Game Character Develpement with Maya" and "Introducing Maya 6 - 3D for Beginners" to help me through. I hope you guys stick around for a moment because I have to make two more threadsSh8key

(I think you'll find there are always people "around" on GG's boards :)

Maya is a great peice of software, an industry standard in multiple industries (along with Max)... though if you are considering making content you can sell without other means of aquiring a Maya commercial license, then the $25 is a great price for Milkshape.(I think you'll find there are always people "around" on GG's boards :)
