Admittedly it wasn't particularly good (lookup Biplane Battle in private T2D forums), but it gave me a good grounding in what was needed to make something better.
To start with, I'd suggest leaving the engine alone getting to grips with the scripting, and then you can look at extending/modifying the engine as the scope of your game grows.
There are a wealth of code snippets/hints/tutorials in the private forums, and as it sounds like you aren't new to coding, you should be up and running pretty quickly.
What I'm finding now is that I'm spending more time creating art assets than scripting. And then there's the sound which I haven't even started on for my current project...

Nope, nor me really. But T2D makes it fairly painless to get going. I knocked up my first game in about 2 weeks when T2D was released, and that was just spending a few hours a night on it.Admittedly it wasn't particularly good (lookup Biplane Battle in private T2D forums), but it gave me a good grounding in what was needed to make something better.

T2D is written specifically to keep people from ever having to touch C++ code--unless there is something extremely unusual, you will be doing a very large portion of your game dev in TorqueScript--which can be a very good thing!
