Radeon 9800XT problems? HELP

I have 3.2GHz machine with XP Pro running an ati radeon 9800xt (256mb) card... I've downloaded the latest drivers, but whenever I attempt to start the torque demo, the garagegames splash screen comes up (but is dark grey), then the screen either hangs or goes completely blank (the monitor goes into standby mode)... I end up having to cold boot the machine...

has this happened to anyone? any ideas?

I'd verify that your 3D settings (Display->Settings->Advanced button->3D tab) are NOT set to Custom, at least to test things out. I've had numerous problems when attempting to use Custom settings to override things such as anti-aliasing or the anisotropic filtering. Just a first pass suggestion.

They're all set to default

I've also tried turning off Hardware acceleration, and most of the other options in the ati control panel, but to no avail...

I have nearly the exact same setup as you, with the latest drivers and I'm currently experiencing no problems whatsoever.
Did this just happen when you upgraded your drivers or is this a fresh install?

I would suggest looking somewhere else other than your driver settings (like making sure it's getting loaded up properly, etc.).
Does it work with other games?
