Phoenix Marketing International's most recent market research study reveals that minority ethnic groups spend almost twice as much in the USA as European players on monthly electronic gaming purchases. According to David Pluchino, Senior Research Manager, "the results indicate that gamers spend approximately US$34 per month on software and/or hardware/accessories". Asians are spending the most, while Caucasians are spending the least amount of money on video games.
When asked about gaming genre preference, "Action/adventure, arcade and racing are the top three preferred genres. However, when you look at how much is being spent by preferred gaming genre, those who prefer shooters spend the most each month ($50), RTS and sports games follow closely behind," added Pluchino.
Phoenix Marketing International also says a quarter of gamers surveyed plan to purchase a PSP unit in the near future. Among those currently not gaming, 5% claim they also are planning to purchase a Sony PSP. African-Americans and Asians are most likely to have already purchased a PSP, while Caucasians are both the least likely to have already purchased or plan to purchase a Sony PSP. Not surprising, with the slew of sports games available for the PSP, those gamers preferring sports titles are most likely to have already purchased a PSP.
The results are based on a market research study conducted by Phoenix Marketing International of more than 18,000 completed interviews. This robust sample yields a 95% confidence interval with an error margin of +/- 0.7%.

There was a poll a while back that showed the most installed "Media Player" was Flash with 98.5%. Good old Windows Media Player came in at a paltry 58% or something like that. How stupid is that? First, Flash is NOT a media player, it can play media, but you dont use it to launch your MP3's and Video's. And you dont need a poll(just a brain will do) to know that WMP has been bundled with Windows since Win98, which means a virtual 100% install rate. What's sickening is the poll was done by a "reputable" industry analyzer.

Kind of confused about the point you are trying to make. First you state that polls are worthless. You also state that PMI is a "reputable" industry analyzer. Then you say its sickening that it was done by them. I am pretty sure this is not the first poll this company has ever done so what exactly is so sickening about it? Also if they reputable before and were doing polls what has changed that now makes them less reputable, if that is what you are implying.

How you do the maths on these polls anyway? Out of 18,000 people, how were the ethnicities split up? Surveying 2 white guys, 8,999 asians, and 8,999 africans is going to give you the results that white people spend less.
And how likely is it that the publishers are interested in this information? They may run demographic surverys, but I'd imagine the most important factor is the colour of their money, and not their skin.

Todd, I think Gonzo was saying the Media Player poll was done by a reputable company, and that's what made him sick. How you do the maths on these polls anyway? @ Todd - "Reputable" is the industry opinion and not my own. The polls they do can have a great impact on stocks and ESPECIALLY market perception. Those that do not understand the little details that make a poll worthless can be easily influenced by it. The media player poll was sickening in that what it all boiled down to was someone(Macromedia or Adobe) paid to have that poll done by the "reputable" company and the results they got were coincidentally enough, exceptionally generous to them. In other words, it was a bunch of fabricated crap. Being that they are a well known data collection service, the story was picked up by quite a few clueless reporters who delivered it as if it were gospel, and shortly after it was being spread as industry chatter among the clueless readers of those reports.

Honestly, it's not because I'm white. It's because I had a high college debt to annual income ratio (it's actually about 1 now, but that's after 3 years).

I'm white, and I don't spend much on games. I buy them after they've been out for a few years and are being sold for $10.Honestly, it's not because I'm white. It's because I had a high college debt to annual income ratio (it's actually about 1 now, but that's after 3 years).

Perhaps the higher spending of non-caucasians reflects other social factors than their love of games. I know several white guys who would spend at least $20 a month on games if they had $20 a month... lol. And they all prefer RPGs although they'll play FPSs as well.

I had been looking for the solution to the common equation:
1. Cool design concept.
2. ???
3. $$$
I just found step 2!
It would be interesting to see the same 18,000 queried about their piracy habits as well. Since they had a consistent sample base, it would be interesting to see how they answered other questions. It would also be interesting to see the relative income level of those polled to see the the sample came from similar incomes or disparate ones.
