A Walk in the Park - easy level
by RJ Smith · in Marble Blast · 05/12/2005 (9:42 pm) · 49 replies
Okay, I got carried away with my first level... it's really big (10 minute normal play time), but it's also pretty easy. I designed it with my neice and sister in mind (ages 10 and 50). It's name is A Walk in the Park. It's VERY difficult to fall off!
Let me know if you want it.
Thanks! -RJ

With most marble blast levels, there is the danger of falling off the edge.
Well you have got rid of that danger and introduced another challenge,
time vs space, in a thoroughly original park setting...It is so good that
you did not even need to use the jump jump jump or skate park maps.
Wow! Creative use of elementary pieces...There is so much space to roam,
that the replay value is high. And I like your use of space textures - very impressive.
I look forward to sampling some more of your work.

thanks for the kind words! Was the replay value high enough to keep trying for the gold time? Any glitches that need fixing? Any suggestions? I'm open to any and all feedback.
Again, the target audience is beginner to intermediate players, but I hope it's entertaining enough for more advanced players too.

but there are many die-hard player who would, and I am sure this level
merits a high replay value for them to beat the gold time. (I got 7:12!)
I do not consider myself a very skilled player, (I have finished most of the advanced levels,
including Mountain but only quite a few custom levels) so it took me about three attempts.
The first attempt, I started off wondering around aimlessly but did not find all of the gems.
The second attempt, I realised that there was a set path through the level,
but did not find all the gems and searched for the ones I had missed after the qualify time.
The third attempt, I managed it! It was a fun challenge, and not at all tedious,
(some levels really do seriously annoy me and that is not at all pleasant!!!).
This is a really open-ended level.
I think I prefer more open-ended levels, and I am sure there are other die-hard adventure game fans,
like me, Myst, Sims and the like who enjoy these types of levels and prefer them to puzzles or races.
Hint to other editors - make more open-ended levels! We like them! :->

One comment I've heard from most people is that they didn't find all the gems at first. Yes, I hid a couple of them on purpose (evil grin), but I also put some help trigger hints (ghost marbles) near the finish.
Question: think back to the first time you played it. Were the ghost marbles themselves easy enough to find, keeping in mind the target audience of Beginners, Little Kids and Retirees? Was your impusle to go check them out when you couldn't find all the gems?
I'd like to thank the author of the level where I first saw the concept of combining a ghost marble / help trigger. It comes in handy in a few situations. Great idea!
But I can't remember the name of the level! It was a fairly large level, with a lot of mud in the middle section.
Any help?

I didn't notice the help marbles until I started wandering around looking for the gem I couldn't find. Maybe you could put a trigger in the beginning telling the users about them. Was the level Adventure Island?

Ooh. I was just starting in on making a level for my little one. He likes the game, there are only a few levels he can do without falling off.ggames@lancehampton.com

AVOID THE "BUMPER TOWER" -- the gem is sticking out the back just a tad. Use a super-jump to walk up the wall, or combine it with a hop to get higher.
If anybody wants the other tips on how to get under 5 minutes, let me know. -RJ
