Retro GIDing

The other day, a friend of mine gave me a pile of broken Amigas, of which I got 2 of them working. This got me feeling a bit nostalgic, so I fired up my old Amiga and had a poke around at some of my old source code ... which got me feeling even more nostalgic, so I started thinking ...
There's a lot of retro styled GIDs that have been done over the past year, so how much fun would it be to forget about our shiny new PCs/Macs, drag our old computers out of the closet, and GID on them instead ?
Anyway, I'm pondering whether its worth doing this as a special event for the next GID. Rough guidelines would be:
1: No hardware that is still in production
2: If you have to use a PC, nothing newer then DOS 6.22
3: Use the devtools of the day
4: Emulators are OK as long as what you're emulating meets the above
Other then that, normal GID rules would apply.
Good idea? Bad idea? Any additional suggestions?
I'll probably end up doing this myself at some point anyway regardless, but it would be nice to know if there's enough interest to warrant making it an official part of a future GID.

I suppose you are right... However, getting people to agree to GID on old hardware is going to be 100 times more difficult then getting them to remake old games with Torque.

Did you read the whole thread? It sounds like you didnt :)

You want to turn the next GID into a special event using old HW to make retro games... which is a ludacris idea and I doubt you will find anyone (as most people seemed to voice)... No offence
So I offered a parallel idea of having people GID remakes instead of GIDing on ancient HW... I dont know what is confusing you, it was a pretty straightforward post.
And it IS a GID idea, and not a game idea... GID theme of remaking retro games...

Uh... Ya, I read the whole thread. I dont know why you would think otherwise. You want to turn the next GID into a special event using old HW to make retro games... which is a ludacris idea and I doubt you will find anyone (as most people seemed to voice)... No offence

The reason i thought you hadnt read the whole thread was that you seem to of missed some things that were said later in it and I thought that you meant that I personally should remake one of the games you mentioned. I accept that most people wont want to GID with old hardware, that is why I said (more then once) that if it happened, it would just be a side event, and not replace the normal GID. Then I derailed the original idea to find ideas to make GID more fun for those, like myself, that are getting bored of the current format.T.

Well then, everything I said pretty much fits with where things were headed in the thread.

I am a bit concerned that you are thinking of changing the format because you are getting bored of it. This makes it a moving target for anyone else who wants to join in. I always thought the aim was not to have a set crowd of people doing GID but, to have anyone give it a go. It sounds like GID is becoming some exclusive club and the members are getting bored!
Why not try shouting louder about GID and getting some fresh blood involved.

I'm not sure what you mean. I dont want to change the format, only add to it. Some people, including myself, are always going to be looking for new ideas and new ways to GID. I dont see what's wrong with that or how it makes it an exclusive club. The original point to GID, and still the guiding point, is to have fun.

This is a side event of GID... Regular GID will still be the same show and open to eveyrone...

I believe Peter is misunderstanding... This is a side event of GID... Regular GID will still be the same show and open to eveyrone...

I have a 486 PC and an 'Educational Use Only' license of Borland C/C++, that is where I first learned C. I don't know that I have the time, but it sounds interesting.
The best way is definitely to give options, Standard GID, Retro GID, 24 Games in a day(I'm no where near that good now but I'd like to be), and most intriguing to me Common Start Point GID. All happen at the same time, the entrant chooses the constraints they want to challenge themselves with.

Oh, I think this might be the first I've hear of GID, if I did hear about it before, it was before I had any graphics libraries working on my system. That falls into the "game idea" category rather then "gid idea" category. If you go through old GID entries, a large number of them are remakes of old games. Personally, if I were to revamp old games again, it would have to be something obscure yet fun.
