Upgraded to OSX 10.4. Now my sound doesn't work

by Don Parrish · in General Game Discussion · 04/30/2005 (8:03 am) · 34 replies

I upgraded to the new Tiger OS. I can hear the music, but I can't hear the other sounds. I installed new and I still have the same problem with the new install. Any ideas?

It doesn't seem like anyone cares about this issue. Maybe I miss judged GarageGames.

You need to get the older OpenAL sound drivers.

Read this post:

Josh Williams posted links a little way down to the older drivers which do work with Torque.

For some reason it says I don't have access to that forum. Where should I go to get the driver you are talking about? And will It mess up Tiger?

You can always get the new driver and reinstall it. Here's the actual link.

I installed the drivers and rebooted, but there is no improvement.

... OH wait a sec ... what worked best was actually using the OpenAL from Marble Blast (if you have that one). I forgot that even that link I think might have been to some slightly newer OpenAL Drivers. Orbz also has it's own ... try ctrl clicking the Orbz (or Marble Blast) app in it's native folder and showing contents. Then go under contents and then frameworks and copy the OpenAL framework from that into your Library/Frameworks folder on your Mac HD.

Basically, though I had the same problem as you ... I hope it's not a Tiger issue though I fear it might be. I'm still on OSX.

Did you ever get this working?

No, I tried the OpenAL framework from both Marble Blast, which works fine still, and Orbz. Orbz still doesnt work.

It looks like a few different Torque games are experiencing this. We are investigating and will report back a work around as soon as we find one.

Just to add my .02, I've tried downloading several openAL frameworks and trying them on my tiger machine. The one in that thread mentioned above made no difference.

Marble blast plays music, but then if I copy the framework out of it and into /Library/Frameworks and try spacescroller, I hear nothing.

On top of the sound issue I also had some settings reset but not to default. I looked at them in options and they were the same as I had had them. I've fixed it but I thought you might want to know.

My own game KOTM and Marble Blast work fine ... and I have to check Think Tanks but Orbz is the only one I've played that doesn't seem to work.

People are having trouble with Lore as well Jeremy.

Confirmed: Just upgraded to Tiger and lost sound in Think Tanks. Problem seems well documented here and at planetthinktanks.com , but the solution is "replace new Tiger stuff with old compatible stuff"? Being Think Tanks is 2+ yrs old, we'd prefer an upgrade from GG for their game(s) rather than asking us to mess around with the frameworks in our new OSX release.

GOOD GRIEF!!!! I had just purchased lore to see what a finished game using the tge could do, and the graghic's look good, game play is a little choppy, and yes major sound issue! I am also running the tiger os, read the forums for help with audio problem to no satisfactory result. I'm having trouble believing that this game is sold as is with these kinds of unfinished? problems for the customer. Though I did read the review's for the game on the gg site all sounded good to me, so I purchased the game. Now that I have it, I feel that I've just wasted my money on something that fell short of what could have been as cool as the reviews led me to believe. Also I agree with Chris C, upgrade, retest and make sure the game run smooth out of the box across the systems before you sell it to the customer. I am not happy with this and hope that there is a patch soon to solve these problems.

These games were released before Tiger came out. If you really paid attention to the postings on the Lore website, you would have seen this posting indicating that Tiger changed some core system libraries. The devs are working on it. As for Orbz, they'll soon be releasing (I hope) a new version of that game. I'd be willing to bet they too have a copy of Tiger & are testing the sound on it as well.
