Interesting Xbox 2/PC Convergence...

J Allard has spoke of connectivity between the PC and the Xbox 2, and Microsoft is making a really big deal out of this "Marketplace" deal. I think the norm next gen is gonna be for ANY developer of just about any game (save a few, like RTS games) will have them on both PC and Xbox 2.

A very interesting way this connectivity could be used, imo, is the PC for modding. As in, the developer releases a bunch of modding tools for the PC, then the modders can create a mod for both the PC and Xbox 2, then post it up on the Marketplace and sell it for cheap.

Seems like a new door for Indie developers to enter the arena. Not having to worry about creating a whole bunch of content, or getting a game out to hundreds of thousands of people, but just creating quality mods/maps on the PC, then being able to distribute it to millions, and even being able to charge.

I really just think Xbox 2 is going to change the way modding is done. I really hope stuff like this happens. I mean, can any of you imagine "professional" mod teams putting out maps and content for their favorite games? Talk about fun.

Alright then.... In all honesty, is XNA actually going to allow indies such as ourselves to produce XBox 360 content?

PomPom kick up a Storm on Xbox 360

2nd August 2005, London UK. Award-winning Indie game developers PomPom Software today announced the signing of an agreement with Microsoft that will see both a new version of its critically acclaimed Mutant Storm and a sequel appearing exclusively on Xbox 360.

Building on its success on Xbox Live Arcade, the deal will see a radically re-engineered Mutant Storm (currently code-named Reloaded) appearing on Xbox 360 Live Arcade as a launch title this holiday and Mutant Storm 2 (an exciting progression of the franchise, currently code-named Revolution) is due to appear in the second half of 2006.

Earlier versions of Mutant Storm received considerable praise on Xbox, Windows, Linux and Macintosh platforms and the title is widely acknowledged as being one of the definitive pure arcade gaming experiences.

Said Miles Visman of PomPom Software, "Naturally, we are delighted to be working with Microsoft on this ambitious new project. Writing for a platform as powerful as Xbox 360 is allowing us to put in features and ideas for the game which just weren't possible previously. We're looking forward to delivering the best ever version of Mutant Storm"

Ross Erickson of Microsoft enthused, "Not only are we excited about this news, but we know our gamers will be equally enthusiastic. Mutant Storm's popularity is only growing and we look forward to offering this fantastic new title on Xbox 360."

Said John Cook of Bad Management, PomPom's representative, "This is recognition by one of the biggest companies in the world that small independent developers still have a valuable commercial contribution to make at the top table of the interactive entertainment industry."

If, say, Half-Life 2 were to come out on the 360(I know it's coming out for plain ole' Xbox, but HL1 was on both PS1 and PS2 and maybe a 360 version woudl have HD) then that'd be sweet if the SOurce Mods would work on the 360. Like, not right away, but only a few minor changes to port a mod to the 360. That'd rock(dreams of CS:S with HD).
