Terrains with terragen

by arda · in Torque Game Engine · 04/23/2005 (2:16 pm) · 5 replies

Hi you all,

There are 2 thinks I want to know about terragen.

1. Can I generate height maps and light maps for terrain ?
2. Can I use terragen generated lightmaps (if it generates) for terrain, It'd be sweet to be able to see self shadowing terrains.

When I have a look at one of TSE demos, following the discussion about that demo, I saw those beatiful terrain and terrain demos are generated with terragen.

Thanks

I think only TSE supports terragen height maps (I tried with TEG once, and I just got loads of tall sharp points)

Not sure about lightmaps.

1. For the heightmaps - Of course, although it may take work to get them into TGE's terrain engine.
2. TGE's terrain is self shadowing and based on my work with Terragen and TSE's terrain, has much better looking shadows than Terragen produces.

I just bought the TSE, and now working with terragen.

It may not be the place to ask how did you get the height map from
terragen?

when I run TSE water demo, the terraing self shadowing is shading sweet
water effect.

I'm still working on the tutorials for terragen, and generating height maps has not show up, I hope it'll : )

Cheers

The new TSE terrain has not been released yet; what you are working with is a port of TGE's terrain, not a complete rewrite. When the new terrain comes out we will also release documentation on how to bring various source art in.

Day 1 for me, and I've got a question regarding using a bitmap for terrain heightmapping in TGE. Any ideas?
