What's the status of SP2 these days?

by Kevin La Barre · in General Discussion · 04/20/2005 (5:23 am) · 23 replies

I suppose I'm asking the question as it affects not only game development but all personal computer operations. When XP SP2 was first released many were warning against installing it. Now that many months have gone by, what's the recommendation today? Install SP2 or continue to hold off?

Power went out on my PC while installing SP2. After the power came back on in my house I rebooted my computer and continued the install without any further problems. Never had any issues with SP2. (Downloaded it as soon as it was available.

I would recommend running both a full Spyware checker/cleaner and virus scan SW on your PC before you upgrade. I know Microsoft had trouble with systems where DLL's or links were replaced by Spyware.

I just follow the idea that any damage or inconvenience from SP2 of any other MS critical updates is nothing compared to leaving unpatched holes in your system that Script kiddies can exploit through automated tools.

If your really worried about something not working, buy a copy of norton ghost and ghost your machine before updating. Any problems you can revert back and try again in a few more updates.

Personally I've never had a single problem with either XP standard or XP with all latest updates. Compared to how reliable windows 98, 95 and 3.1 were, I really have changed my opinion of microsoft.
