Skinning

by Griffin Milsap · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 04/19/2005 (7:54 pm) · 5 replies

I'm new to 3d art, and have experimented around in 3ds max a bit, but find myself a bit lacking in the skinning category.

I can make a decent model which is low-poly, and looks nice, but once it comes to skinning the model, I am beyond hope.

Can anybody reccommend some articles, websites or books?

Thanks,

-Griff

Are you talking about skinning (attaching bones to the mesh), or texturing (Using a 3rd party program like Photoshop and a UV-Map)?

Check out Ben Mathis's site. Hes got some really good video tutorials.

There is two books that deals with skinning with 3d models for TGE.

3D Game Programming All in One - has demos of milkshape 3d, uv mapper and paint shop pro 8
2D Artwork and 3D Modeling for Game Artists - has demos of 3ds max 5, photoshop 6.0, deep paint 3d, deep uv, truespace4 & 6, realwars.

Alright, I suppose I should have been a bit more clear.

Its the 2d aspect of the 3d models, the actual texturing of the model.

Where do you draw the line between texture and polies?
How do you successfully portray a low poly face using mostly texture?
How do you texture different effects like scales and fur?

I've seen everything on http://www.poopinmymouth.com and its very helpful, and actually taught me how to model in the first place, but the 2d aspect is a little hard to pick up for me.

I'm a bit more into the programming aspect of things, but I would also like to learn how to make some decent art too. Luckily, I already own a copy of the book Drawing on the right side of the brain and I'm going through it, but I would like to know how to work with my wacom and how to use photoshop to make a convincing model.

Thanks for the current replies, and I'm going to check out 2D Artwork and 3D Modeling for Game Artists as soon as possible.

Here's a face painting tut using a wacom/ PS. Advanced tutorial, but still helpful.
