Mac G3 good enough to make T2d conversions?

by Vashner · in Torque Game Builder · 04/17/2005 (10:13 pm) · 13 replies

Is a G3 good enough to port my T2D windows games to mac? Also how much RAM would it need to have?

I don't have a great answer for this but until you get one I can tell you that a lot of people are working on real low end machines and doing ok. So I think a G3 should be above average. Do you know how much video memory you have.

I am looking to buy a used one. I have not owned a Mac since the early 90's.

Get a Mac Mini ... $499 and it runs everything Torque great!

How much work would you need to do on the Mac side of it? I have an iMac G3 600 with 384 megs of RAM, and it can run most of the games no problem. If by porting you mean recompiling the engine and the DSO files, even some basic testing, you should be fine.

Saving up for a mini myself :)

Mini is G4 based right?
If I buy an old box that has MacOS do I need to purchase OSX as an upgrade?

I'm using an old graphite iMac, and it works fine, so something from this decade should definitely be okay :-)

A G3 what? G3 is processor class. I think on the low end it started at about 166 mhz, and on the high end, IBM has made up in the 1.6 Ghz range IIRC. "G3" isn't simply enough to know. Also, it depends on the video card as well, but if your machine was made after probably about 2000, it's fine. T2D isn't a big ugly beast.

@Randy: If if you buy a used computer that doesn't have OS X on it, yes you obviously need to buy it.

I am just gonna get a mini then. Too many other headaches with older boxes. Though there are some cheap ones
on ebay.

I'd certainly recommend a mini, yes. Faster and they already come with the latest and greatest software. Plus you'll get a free upgrade to Tiger if you buy one.

@Seth yea sorry I was too vague about the specs. I'll admit I am rusty been out of the Mac world for maybe 8 years.
