Just thought I'd let those of you interested in creating pre-rendered models for the purpose of creating in-game sprites-
Caligari has placed Truespace 5.2 on sale for only $89 US for one day only!

Check it out!:)

www.caligari.com

I personally prefer to use Blender for my modelling(its a whole lot better in my not so professional opinion), but for those of you who'd prefer to work with Truespace, here's a whopper of a deal!:)

Isn't this more of a TGE art pipeline tool? How would you apply this product to a T2D game application?

Well, you make the model of your character, then take a series of screenshots from all available angles your character can move in and it's different actions.

Quite a bit faster than handmaking each sprite.

Yep. Tons of 2D games use prerendered art. Donkey Kong Country for Super Nintendo was one of the first, if you want an example. It's helpful if you have to create animation from an angle, facing multiple directions. Some people even use 3D renders as a reference for drawn animations, to ensure they get the perspective right, and that motions are matched at all angles.

I know that's what they did for the Cloudburst Demo. And I really can't tell the difference. I actully like it because it give more depth the the item.Rounding, etc..

Yeah, the perspective and detail that can be acheived this way is simply amazing; especially obvious with cloudburst and T2D in general!:)

Ok pretend I am stupid for second..

Give me an example of how you would take something from this product and put it into T2d's artpipeline.

Model a character... texture em... animate em.... walking, running, fighting etc...

now you take the camera and put it above the character slightly at an angle for an ISO style view...

render out the animations an image per frame... cut out the frames to make it a smaller animation... you now have a rendered 2D animation sprite :)

you can do it from the side view as well, or whatever view you want

Blender is a good ole program to do these things in as well :) A bit quirky at first, but once you get used to it its pretty awesome, extremely powerful

Another thing that works good is laying a square around the item that you are rendering so that when you crop your images, they will always be the same size.

This is more for animation, but it is helpful
