Legal issues with vehicles in games?

My idea for a game will have cars in there, and also trucks... I was wondering, is there legal issues with using real vehicles, do they need to be lisenced, can i get away with it if I just modify the car a little and change the logo? Thanks

Remaking it exactly can always be a potential problem, but using it as inspiration for a vehicle like it is not.

I've heard this has become a big issue for the plastic model market. A lot of vehicle makers let the model makers produce stuff freely, accepting it as a kind of free advertising. Now they want to charge high fees (effectively doubling the final price of the model) to create another revenue stream and it threatens to put some model makers out of business.

For a pretty good idea of how close you can cut it, you need only look at the myriad commercial games that do just that. The Grand Theft Auto series, for example, is pretty well-known for its "really really really close but not exactly" car designs.

Its interesting this thread popped up right now... Ive been wondering about these exact issues as some of my current work revolves around vehicles. Im taking the stance of "inspiration but not immitation". If you need to make a sports car, look at a dozen examples and then find a nice design that fits with that look. I think its a great way to side step any legal problems.
