At Last!! Minions of Mirth Has done it!!!

I have been exploring Minions of Mirth world and I must say its very very good. This is torque used like I imagined from the beginning :)
Now like the newb I was I didnt read anything at first. I didnt even try single player world but instead jumped straight into the alpha world. And I was grinning from ear to ear. :)
Josh was on and took me on a tour of the place. It took me a min but I manage to catch on to the controls and was checking out the local city, watching Josh demonstrate the realistic effects like weather rain ice, spell effects in the world and on some of the people heh.
I know some on GG play WOW but imagine the same functionality done by a smaller team using torque, Iam not talking graphically I mean functionality was dead-on smooth. Similiar but different still.
We went to the mountain zone to check out the dwarven ruins and Killed some bears and a old great bear. I forgot the bear name. :)
The goblins had invaded the ruins so they were everywhere. The interiors were dark and creepy like most dungeons. I like the way the doors glow eerily, but they will only open if you possess the key.
Did I mention this was made using Torque LOL :)
JohnH :)

EQ had all kind of winners like this... and they never got fixed... I fell to my death numerous times coming into a zone falling off another player. I am quite sure that MoM's source code is in better shape than Everquest's... unless they rewrote it at some point. Broken bard spells anyone? ;)
If you had the pipe and the dedicated machines, you could make a MMORPG with MoM technology. Howver, our current focus, is 3d MUD styled, player hosted, moddable, persistent worlds and full single player support.

I was suprised to learn that Prarie Games was only two people. (still hard to believe)
How do you keep up the momentum to keep the project rolling?

We've added the female elf model + body types to the alpha. The male elf now has his body types too. There are now tons of 3d weapon models that characters and NPCs/Monsters can equip. Also, there is a new gameplay sound system and many more environmental sounds. We've also added vocalizations... I am now itching to add the music...

But that whole "two swords and a shield" thing BUGS me. Having played a LRPG and some SCA, I can speak from experience that while you CAN do that (with some shields), you don't want to. Having both a shield and sword on the same arm is awkward and slow. (Slowly) swinging the sword in particular leaves you wide open because your shield isn't in place any more, and won't be for a relatively long time (a full second is a long time when you're in the thick of things).
Further, many shields simply cannot be used that way. Bucklers can (forearm straps only), but many shields have both a forearm strap and a handle, or just a center-mounted handle. No way you're using one of those and holding a sword.
Sorry. I tend to get irritated at bad movie coreography too. Some of the stuff in the Star Wars movies sets my teeth on edge. OTOH the fencing in the Princess Bride is quite good (until Inigo starts flailing two-handed). Pet peeve I guess.
I suppose if you had your heart set on it, you could impose some kind of parry/accuracy/attack-speed/damage penalties (without tripping on my pet peeve that is). Hey, it's your game.
OTOH in the LRPG, a buckler-spear combo thing we called a "madu" (MAH-doo) was relatively popular. Not so great against missiles (relatively low surface area), but quite decent in melee.

I know what you mean, though usually I think its good to keep in mind that not all games and/or movies are really trying to be 100% realstic. In a fantasy world that cool factor of having two swords and a sheild may be worth it. Keep in mind spells, creatures, etc etc those aren't real either :) (ok enough sarcasm lol). Though honestly if all fantasy games were realistic I probably wouldn't play them *shrug* ... at least in certain respects. I play "sim" games if I want something realstic (minus the actual "sims")
Personally I think two swords and a sheild would be a great "skill" to be able to learn at high levels!

Some patch info from the last couple days... I have also embedded a full Web Server into the MoM World Server... more about this a bit later though :)
5-23-05
+ mobs will now equip any wearable loot they may have... and you'll be able to see the equipment on their 3d avatar!
+ third person view camera is no longer blocked by other players
+ select now toggles between mobs when they overlap. If a living mob is standing on a corpse you want to loot, use ctrl-click
+ updates to Trinst NPCs (check out new Skeleton loot!)
+ added (in progress) human female
+ World Update program to handle world database schema evolution.
5-22-05
+ added /ladder command ... shows the most experienced characters (and players) in the realm
+ World aggro is now persistent (/imm aggro on|off), this aids in editing as mobs won't strike you down the second you log in
+ /imm recompile now handles spawnpoints (addition, subtraction, modification), bindpoints, and dialog triggers properly
05/23/2005 (3:11 pm)
It's totally possible, if someone wants to make a "realism mod", to make it impossible to use 2 weapons + a shield... though, all of MoM's shields come with adhesive sticky to attach them to your forearm. In comibination with the magnetic strip on all weapon handles, this makes wielding 2 weapons + a shield very easy. Some patch info from the last couple days... I have also embedded a full Web Server into the MoM World Server... more about this a bit later though :)

Prairie Games IRC Server:
minions.servegame.com 6667 channel #prairiegames
or use the web interface at:
Web Chat
Additionally, I hooked up a SSH shell (with syntax coloring) for interactively modifying running World Servers... It's pretty damn cool to enter something in the shell like: player.gold = 99 ... and see the client magically update!!
You can also see the current ladder results if you look closely :)

For anyone who might have missed the embedded web server in the World Server:
There is some discussion of it HERE

+ Pets can now be equipped with weapons and armor!!! If a pet dies, the items may be looted off the pet's corpse. To equip your pet, double click the pet with an item in your cursor, then within three seconds, double click again... this is to avoid accidentally giving items to your pet.
+ Items can now have spell like effects attached to them. Melee strike and passive spell like effects are currently hooked up. We'll add effects for when a character is struck and item uses soon.
+ Items can now grant their wearer haste. Haste items do not stack, the best haste item worn will be used in calculations.
+ Item quality levels of cruddy, shoddy, normal, superior, and exceptional
+ Characters (and mobs) with the "Inflict Critical" skill now have a chance of critically injuring their opponent
+ Player's can no longer damage other players... until we get a chance to implement this properly
+ Mobs now use skills if they have them (Barbarian Rage for instance)
+ Descriptions were added to the /eval command. Currently the only spawn with a description is the "Festering Corpse" in the Trinst Sewer System (thanks Rev-O)
+ Captains Belt (10% haste), Harmonic Kimono (regeneration and passive healing proc), Flaming Scimitar (chance of causing burn damage), now drop in Trinst... Tainted Tickler (Dagger with a DoT proc) drops in the Trinst Sewer System
+ Fixed invisibility and see invisible wizard spells
+ Many more spell casting mobs...
